C9 - Sunday, June 24, 1984 - North Shore News Classic beach resorts close to home HEN we think of beach-front resorts and classic old country inns we_ usually visualize England or some part of the American East Coast. It may surprise many to learn about a number of fine establishments as little as 20 minutes drive from friendly downtown Nanaimo. Since 1939 Yellow Point Lodge has been welcoming visitors to log-cabin comfort, offering huge meals (full American Plan), a salt-water pool, tennis courts and a con- genial lounge with a fireplace large enough to eat half a tree. The rooms are comfort- able, if rustic, and although most have bathrooms with shower or tub, some are basin-only with the facilities C wn the hall. The meals, served in a comfortable dining room with trestle tables are classic Canadian home _ cooking. Breakfast is the usual eggs- bacon-sausage-pancakes while lunch, often served around the barbecue is a salad bar and entree — per- haps barbecued burgers or a quiche. A sample dinner menu: Soup, salad, hot rolls, baked ham, scalloped pota- toes, fresh asparayus and blueberry pie. Everything 1s -homemade. The Lodge has a beer and wine licence and provides ice and mix for those who bring their own liquor. If you run out there’s a liquor store in Ladysmith just a few miles up the road. in the evenings, guests con- gregate in the lounge, a huge room with comfortable groupings of overstuffed chesterfields and_ chairs. There are all sorts of books and games - the Trivial Pur- suit is well-worn as is the dart board. There are two pianos and with luck one of the guests 1S ready to lead a sing- song. Yellow Point Lodge’s new next-door neighbor ts the elegant Inn of the Sea. Built tin 1983, the Inn 1s a condo. mintum complex offering magnificent — and large one bedroom suites The design has included a number of hotel type rooms which 925-1212 PRIME TRAVEL Suite 210 a 2") 1760 Marine Drive, West Van travel- wise by Barbara McCreadie can be rented singly or com- bined with a suite to provide additional accommodation for family groups. The Inn is built on the site of the old ABC Lodge which some of you may remember. The old main building has been completely renovated and houses the lobby, an ex- cellent restaurant and a cozy bar. Just outside is a sunny patio where drinks or after- noon teas are served along- side a pool and whirlpool. Immaculate lawns and gardens stretch from the ten- his courts in the rear to the sea wall in front. Although the restaurant serves fine food, a guest would be well advised to take advantage of the kitchen in the condo for a fair number of meals. Brian and | had Cream of Broccol: soup Co start and he had the Rack of Lamb. | had a dehcious Seafood Newburg and we shared a bottle of Holtyburn Plaza Momber of NITA Medoc. Our bill was about $55, which is OK now and again but not every night. There is a large gas barbe- cue on the patio for the use of the guests. The kitchen and dining room in our suite was larger than ours at home and there is an efficient fireplace in every suite — plus an un- limited supply of free wood. A balcony front and back en- sures sunshine for sunbathers all day, weather cooperating. The Inn of the Sea also provides moorage for boaters. My only complaint about the Inn of the Sea is that the i saw fit to imstall ONLY double beds. No twins, no Queens and cer- tainly no Kings. If you’re visiting either the Inn or the Lodge you may want to bring along some bottled water. I found the tap water a bit salty. Although a car is fun to have along for day tips, both resorts will pick up foot passengers from the Nanaimo ferry. HOW TO GET THERE: Both lodges are on the beach, 12 miles south of Nanaimo. Head south on #1 and watch carefully for Yellow Point signs off to the left, three miles south. The side road is well marked but there ts just one highway sign and if you blink you'll miss it.
