SYLVESTER Stallone steps out of the boxing ring
and onto the country and western singer’s stage in
the movie Rhinestone, but don’t expect this film to

pack a winner’s punch.

Rhinestone is a comedy,
taking weak jabs at the whole
country and western scene,
but between Stallone’s nasal
coyote howling into the
microphone and his droll
humor, the movie misses the
funny mark by a mile.

Dolly Parton puts in a fair
enough performance as a
country and western singer in
New York, but the part was
tailored to fit her tighter
than the cowgirl costumes she
wears. She stays away from
any serious acting and lets
her voice carry the role.

Rhinestone is the story of
what happens when country
and western singer Jake (Dol-
ly Parton) makes a bet with
her lecherous manager Fred-
die (Ron Leibman). While
happy as a country singer in
New York, Jake is not happy
with her contract tying her to
Freddie’s dive of a _ night
club. She wagers her contract
that she can make any or-
dinary person into a country
singer over a_ two-week
period, and.win the club’s
amateur night contest. If she
wins, she gets back her con-
tract, if she loses, Freddie
gets an additional five years
on the contract and a ‘night
1o remember'’ with Jake.

Tennessee, where Jake grew
up ina tiny, hillbilly town

Jake reasons that if Nick is
going to learn to sing coun-
try, he has to learn to ‘‘think
country.’” What better place
to learn than in the hills with
the Wild Possums Band.

Stallone then proceeds to
show the country hicks real
New York sophistication
with lines like, ‘‘God, | hate
hillbillies."” Jake and the
boys in the band teach Nick
how to walk and talk
western, but even with
Dolly’s jiggles and giggles,
she can’t teach him how to
sing.

The movie might have got-
ten a few more laughs if
Stallone had stayed away
from the microphone and put
more effort into learning how
to tell jokes. If Rhinestone
has its highlights, the} center
around the local country bar,
The Cut And Slice. Here,
Nick and Jake mingle with
the cowboys, and practise
their singing act. A few good
old boy fights are thrown in
along with plenty of beer and
banging on country guitars

Another disappointment 1s
this film is the performance
of Richard Farnsworth,
whose appearance in the
Canadian movie The Grey
Fox won him international
acclaim tn Rhinestone, he
plays Jake's dad. Noah. but
plays the part
