A8-Wednesday, October 29, 1980 - North Shore News hall proposals and that he’s just about ready to give up. Campbell says the location is totally unsuitable for a fire training centre because of its proximity to the school and neighboring homes, some of which are still being built. His objections are to the generated. But even more than that, he says neighbors object to the “spot rezoning” of the District council in what he describes as another of many examples of the council's “confrontation politics”. As far as he’s concerned, the proposal is in the same bag as the Seylynn Park firehall and _ District’s alternative plan for a new firehall which involves expropriating land from the Noble family to within a few feet of their house at 1521 Hunter Street. COMMUNITY INPUT “Why do they insist on coming up with these schemes without any input from the community,” Campbell asks. “All they do is give us one night to change their minds for them.” He also objects to District only publicizing details of the fire training centre proposal five days prior to the public meeting. “There is no reason why we couldn't have been given more time,” he fumes. “Not a year goes by when they don’t try to take part of Bridgeman Park or Seylynn Park because they want to do something with it. I can’t remember a year when we have not had to go out and mobilize people and knock fore ‘confrontation FROM PAGE A1 on every door because there is another issue.” He says of the latest issue: “It is another example of what Mayor Bell euphemistically calls ‘spot rezoning’. I think it is a lack of response to the com- munity concerned. I have seen way too much of confrontation politics.” Campbell says both District and the fire department plays on the fact that firefighters are an essential community service and have a popular profile. “My father and uncle and two of my cousins are firemen and I think firemen are terrific,” he adds. “But when it comes to a firemen’s training centre a block and a half from my daughter's school and so near a residential area it's just too much.” Fire chief MacDonald refutes Campbell's claim that noise from the department's centre at Mount Seymour Parkway was so much that it exceeded the District bylaws. In fact, he maintains that noise readings showed that the- noise generated is less than can be heard there from traffic on the Upper Levels highway. NOT SURPRISED He says of the objections: “Anything we want to do is unacceptable, so it really doesn’t surprise me.” an | find it very discouraging. You sometimes wonder if it's worth all the trouble of reviewing sites and alter- natives.” “It just destroys your own initiative. I have given up.” Asked whether he will not try to convince residents of the validity of the training centre. in its planned location, MacDonald says: “I am going to the public meeting on Thursday and I will probably give up there. I'm getting fed up. It just gets you down when you work so many years and people are continually against whatever you do. “I'm going to present to the public the centre and the fact that we need one and that is it. I don’t need to stand up and argue with anyone about their property and complaints.” The public hearing will be held in Lynnmour school gymnasium and starts at 7:30 p.m. Soccer Special! Wed. to Sat.
