other kooky socialists getting all
bound up in the reins of power.
Are there any good restaurants
left? Or has upscale food naw
become the subject of government

The request for eastern informa-

" tion coincides perfectly with a visit
from a family T.O. refugee.

But first things first: a suitably
splendid North Shore ‘restaurant
backdrop in which to debrief the
unfortunate victim of too many
Ontario winters — Salute.

Now four years old, Salute has
established itself as one of several
special restaurant destinations in
West Vancouver.

It began in 1989 with an alluring
combination of top quality Italian
food and elegantly intimate at-
mosphere and decor and has been
adding interesting ingredients to
that combination ever since.

The restaurant's personable
owner, Gamal Hanna, recently
unveiled Salute’s new summer
menu.

For those who appreciate Han-
na’s version of nosthern Italian
cuisine, that unveiling is worth
celebration, or, at the very least,

serious sampling.

By reducing the number of
pastas and increasing the variety of
seafood and red meat entrees of-
fered, Hanna has come up with a
menu better suited to tackling
boisterous summer dining de-
mands.

Many of the additions were
taken from the restaurant's most
popular specials offered over the
past four years:

Hanna has also adjusted his
wine fist, which was exclusively
Italian, to include bottles frora
Chile and California.

There are still, however, few
wines offered by the glass, and the
price range ($20 to $40 and well
beyond) could be somewhat rich
for some. But for the serious Italian

wine buff, Salute stocks some
complex and first-rate bottles.
Additional attention has also
been focused on service at Salute.
It came under critical fire in the
past for being slow in the dining-
room crunch, but on a recent Fri-
day night, waiting staff were plen-
tiful and our table was afforded
discreet and punctual attention.
And, with tales of wae in T.O.
spilling over onto adjacent tables,
discreet attention was required.
Misery and eastern grumpiness,
we were told, abounds in the
eastern industrial heartland.
Regular folk are singing the Bay
Street Blues, and the socialist
hordes are driving the disillusion-
ed west, where their British Col-
