Hubby Martin Burney (Patrick
Bergin) likes ev erything i in its pro-
per place — including his wife.
Bathroom towels must hang
perfectly even and canned goods
in the cupboards must be neatly

ple black and white tastes are
reflected in his finely tailored
clothes and luxurious beach house
furnishings. However, Martin
preters his wile, Laura (Julia
Roberts), to be a little more color-
ful — usually black and blue with
a daring splash of red.

Director Joseph Ruben and
writer Ronald Bass have a poor
command of suspense and an
even worse feel for romance.
Events that are supposed to be
scary limp between being predict-
able and laughable. And battered
women are definitely nota
laughing matter.

The movie is more miss than hit.

Terrified of the psychotic, Laura
eventually takes her death. Cr as
the voice-over narration says,
“That was the night | died. but
someone was saved.”

Well, that someone sure isn’t
the-audience. The tilm’s pace
creeps along as Laura (now called
Sarah Waters) escapes and settles
into a modern-day Mayberry. A
house, a job and a nice young
drama teacher named Ben (Kevin
Anderson) falls into her lap
without so much as a reference or
social insurance number.

Things are relaxed for this lovely
lady on the lam. Sure, her sen-
sitive bearded friend is a little
puzzled by her fading bruises and
edgy nerves. but he doesn’t push

enough. When you add an offbeat
suitor (Arliss Howard), no money
and an eccentric neighbor Goan
Cusack}, she has very little reason
to get out of bed,

The superb acting carries this
comedy-drama that made almost
no impact at the box office.
