A West Vancouver independent school is spending
$200,000 on a pilot program that will see srudents
trading in pen and paper for laptop computers and
a wireless network.

Mulgrave School's Grade 9 students will be equipped with IBM
ThinkPads when they return to class at Mulgeive’s new Cypress Bowl Road

Appleby College, an independent school located in Oakville Ontario, has
been regarded as a feader in integrating information technology with the
schooling process. A few ago Appleby moved to transform the tradi-
tional classroom into a “wired™ one. ‘Teachers and: students in Grades 7
through 12 were connected with individual laptop computers. Interactive
whiteboards replaced conventional blackboards.

Recent bieakthroughs in rechargeable battery capacity and the amount of
data now possible to push through a wireless nerwork make the Mulgrave
scenario possible. Said Miller, “We're essentially doing something along the
lines Of what Appleby College did but we're doing it a year or two later.
There has been alot of water over the dam in terms of technology and what
you can do, The big idea is that we're planning to integrate computers into
the whole educational process, not just focus on computers as an end in
themselves.”

Man dead in NY heme blaze

A. 78-year-old North Vancouver resident was
found dead on Aug. 5 during a fire in his home

in the Capilano area.
North Vancouver ROMP identified the dead man as John Alan Jackson.
Police say foul play is not suspected in the death.

The fire was contained to a master bedroom in the house in the 4200-
block of Fonteyn Way. The rest of the bouse had smoke damage. The fire
was discovered around 10:30 am. A North Vancouver District Fire and
Rescue spokesman said firefighters conducting a drill on Capilano Road
spotted smoke and traced it to the house at the same time the fire v
