A Year of Academic and Artistic Leadership @ Daniel Brox, a grade 10 student at Sentinel Secondary, achieved 98% on the 1999 Euclid Mathematics competition, tying with five Ontario students for the highest score in Canada. Sentinels team placed first overail in the competition. @ Paul Cheng, a student at West Vancouver Secondary School, attained the highest score in British Columbia on the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge held at the University of Waterloo in November. ® Pin Chang Liu of Sentinel Secondary Schoo! finished first among 2,519 competitors in Physics at the University of Toronto’s Leonardo da Vinci competition. @ Benjamin Steinberg of Sentinel Secondary School was one of only cen BC graduates to be awarded a Gold Medal and a $2,000 scholarship by the Ministry of Education after achieving three perfect scores in Biology, Mathematics and Physics i in the June 1999 provincial examinations. @ Six teams from Chartwell Elementary School will participate in the regional Destination Imagination competition this month. This participation rate is C’s highest. @ International Baccalaureate students Robert Jackson, Charlie Liu and Jamil Karim finished second among 4,999 school teams in the 12-week long CNBC Student Stock Tournament. © Fourteen Rockridge Secondary School students will attend the Nationaj High School Model United Nations Conference in New York this month and present their detailed position papers on such topics as genocide, anti-microbial resistance, and the political stabilization of post-communist nations in the UN General Assembly Hall. ® Brandy Shin's ceramic “clay head with shawl” was selected - for display in the Senate Rotunda in Washington, DC this past September. Brandy, who attends the Advanced Placement Studio Art Program at Sentinel Secondary, was one of twelve North American students chosen for this honour. ® Asa result of its recent success in international competitions in San Francisco and Toronto, the West Vancouver Secondary Treble Choir has been invited to perform this spring at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. A Year of Professional Distinction @ Two West Vancouver staff were elected to the Board of Directors of the Staff Development Council of BC: Dr. Sue Elliott, Westcot Elementary School as President Elect, and Dr. Carol Morris, Sentinel Secondary School as Treasurer. @ Irwin Park’s Tenny Homma was invited to join the IBM K- | 2 Education Team as a national trainer on the use of technology in the classroom. ® Tom Harding of Rockridge won the annual FORED BC environmental education award for an environmental lesson plan that provides “a unique teaching approach engaging students as authentic stream scientists.” Last spring, Tom was invited to present a workshop at the National Science ‘Teachers Association in Boston, Mass. ® Cynthia Nicolson, a teacher at Bowen Island — Community School has been nominated for Onzario’s prestigious Silver Birch Award, following publication of her most recent children’s book entitled The Stars. © Sentinel’s Chris Georgas and Michael Toth combined te write and produce “Class Action”, an inspiring new musical that celebrates our cultural diversity. © Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Douglas Player, was named President Elect of the Canadian Association of School Administrators. A Year of Outstanding Educational Performance West Vancouver public schools lead the province in many measures of academic performance. The BC Foundation Skills Assessment test was written by students in Grades 4, 7 and 10 throughout British Columbia in May 1999.
