Renters need insurance

IF you rent an apart-
ment or house, the
idea of brving renter’s
insurance, also known
as tenant’s insurance,
may not have crossed
your mind.

“Think about it now,”
cautions Valerie MacLean,
Better Business Burcau
spokesperson.

“Rental insurance pro-
tects your belongings against
loss and damage. And it pro-
vides liabilicy protection.”

Reminds Maclean, “Your
landlord’s insurance does not
cover your personal proper-

ty.”

A standard policy will
cover furniture, clothing and
most other personal belong-
dings for their actual cash
value at the time of Joss.

Cash value coverage takes
into account the age and
condition of items at the
time of damage or loss.

You would be reimbursed

for the value ef the item
minus depreciation.

In order to recover your
wascs at the price it will cost
you to replace them, ask
your insurance agent about
replacement value coverage.

The liability coverage in
the renter’s policy applies at
home and elsewhere to
injuries and damages caused
by you or a family member
and will cover regular costs if
you are sued.

However, it does not
include liability. resuiting
from the use of an automo-
bile.

To determine your insur-
ance needs, make a list of all
your houschold belongings.

If possible, note prices
and dates of purchase.

Take photographs or
make a videotape of your
more valued belongings.

Keep your inventory and
visual records of "your
belongings in a safe place,
out side your home.
