% UESTION: Do you notice a strong creosote fireplace odour
throughout your home? |

NSWER: Woodburning fireplaces develop a cre-
osote soot within the chimney flue. This can give off a
very strong scent if allowed to come back into the home.
During low pressure days atmospheric pressure pushes air

down the chimney flues and out any cavity that is available |

such as open windows, doors, venting ducts, etc. When this
happens the odour from the chimney flue migrates through the
home leaving the strong odour behind. Another cause of this
odour is having we fireplaces une over the other on the same
wall and having one buming and the other not. If combustion
air is not provided into the firebox for the fire to burn, the
burning fireplace will draw combustion air from the room
causing some backdrafting but also drawing make up air down
the inoperative fireplace bringing smoke down trom the oper-
ating flue and the odour of creosote into the rooms. By

installing combustion air inlet ports into the firebox you give
the fire direct combustion air without having to draw the air
from other areas. This will stop the odours as well as giving

you a much more efficient fire.
