Familiar, right? Certainly
Calogero Anelio (Francis Capra)
hears it repeatedly from his con-
cerned father, Lorenzo (Robert De
Niro), especially when it comes to
why the boy can’t hang around
crime boss Sonny (Chazz
Palminteri) and his goodfellas.

But the glitzy menace is so close

_~ too close. it’s not easy to keep
your son pure in the Bronx when
e's a curious nine-year-old and

temptation is 50 feet from his
doorstep. As a result, his Sicilian
parents (Kathrine Narducci plays
the mom, Rosina) are constantly
scolding Calogere for sneaking in-
to Chez Bippy, the hood’s favorite
haunt.

Then one day, the kid witnesses
Sonny murder a man, but he
doesn’t squeal to the police.

Now thanks to his code of

silence, “C’’ has a new
nickname, a new father figure and
an income that mocks his bus-
driving dad’s salary. For the next
eight years, he receives two
educations — one at school,
another from the streets.

smart? Well, not if his choice of
friends is any indication. Slick,
Aldo, Crazy Mario and Ralphie
talk tough, but in their pork-pie
hats and Cro-Magnon attitudes
towards women and non-whites,
the word “stunted” leaps to
mind.
