future lies in education Dear Editor: In its recent proposal for a Standard entry-level test for job applicants graduating from high school, the Business Council on National Issues has sent a strong signal to the 10 provincial and the territorial educational systems. At a time when the Canadian economy is shifting from a resource-based to an informa- tion-age economy, our future lies in educating Canadians. ‘Our future also lies in setting and implementing national educa- tional objectives and ensuring that there are national standards which can be measured. It is estimated that by’ the year 2000, over 60% of the jobs in -Canada will require more than high school completion. Education should not be left to the 10 provinces and the territories alone. There must be respect for. the constitutional provisions which state that education (schooling) is under provincial jurisdiction. However, the federal govern- ment must play a significant role in ensuring that our cducational goals and standards are estab- lished to reflect the national cco- nomic strategy.
