Adoption counselling and workshop groups offered From page 37 very hard at resolving their anger, and that’s when they often begin a search. The reasons for searching vary. “Sometimes it’s curiosity about their heritage,’’ says Gibb-Carsley. “Or perhaps they are in search of ~ medical information — very often when an adopted person is think- ing of having a child, he or she is thinking of their genetic background, and that can spur on a search.”’ Other times, adoptees want more. information about themselves. Says Gibb-Carsley, ‘“They often use the metaphor of a puzzle, say- ing there are integral pieces miss- ing, and they want to feel whole and connected.”’ Whatever the reasons, it is clear the parties should understand what their motivation is before searching for someone who, in many ways, is a complete strang- er. Jardine says, ‘‘My biggest mistake was that 1 wanted to be a savior and save my family —. to . take away all those hard years, ! didn’t really appreciate that my ¥8 Calphaion Kettle Calphalon Solo Stir Fry reg. 47.50 family was dysfunctional when I was apprehended, and would probably still be dysfunctional when I met them.*’ After locating their biological family, most birth parents and adoptees report that their initial impulse is to jump on an airplane and go. But caution is advised. Gibb-Carsley says, “The feed- back ! very often get is, I wish I had gone mcre slowly.”’ Some prefer to exchange letters and perhaps photographs, and then talk by telephone before ar- ranging a face-to-face reunion. Whatever the outcome, most people report they are glad when finally reunited with their family of origin. “Even a painful experience is positive,’’ says Jardine. “It’s bet- ter than not knowing.”” In addition to offering search and reunion counselling, Gibb- Carsley is organizing a six-week group for adopted teenagers called Teens Talk About Adoption that started Nov. 26, Other groups and courses for adoptive parents are also offered.
