48 — Sunday, October 20, 1991 — North Shore News B.C. interior puts things into perspective | BEING BRITISH Columbians is one of the things we two have to be thankfu! for, so we doubled our pleasure last weekend by circling the bottom third of this various pro- vince. Our first leg was up the old canyon route, rather than the slicker Coquihalla. There had been times in the.old days travel- ling the canyon when I had feared for my safety, but it’s pretty sophisticated now. We turned east at Cache Creek, and by the time we reached Three Valley Gap that first day we were steeped in color and bursting with pride. All those Interior roads are in beautiful shape. There are im- pressive stretches of new black- topping everywhere, and with many more passing-lanes than us- ed to be the case. We remembered when the Ashcroft Hill demanded, that upcoming traffic back down to a wide place to accommodate the downhill traveller. And clean! In the 2,000-odd kilometres we unravelled in those four days we sew no litter any- where. It was such a pleasure, and was equally true of rest areas and picnic spots. 7 Three Valley Gap, just this side of Revelstoke, achieved that first evening, got its start as a camp for Walter Moberley’s outfit when he was scouting a pack road be- tween the Shuswaps and the Col- umbia, long ago. It’s hard up against two enor- mous chunks of the Monashee Range, so night falls before you’re THE VINTAGE YEARS quite ready for it. I got up early next morning to be able te take a look at their ongoing museum col- lection. A lot of it is old rolling-stock — there’s a lovely old parlor car with green velvet curtains tied back. Remember them? And an all-wooden sleeping-car. Lots of cabooses and stuff. _ There’s also one shori street constructed from assorted aged frame buildings, all bearing signs for some service or other. I liked the one that said, ‘Friendly Rooms and Bath, etc.”” It was years since we'd tackled the Rogers Pass, so we rewarded our efforts with the amenities of Radium Resort on its far side. We reached it shortly after noon. The sun was so beautiful and the hills so colorful that any place would charm, but this particular inn goes to extra lengths. Nice room appointments, good dining room, golf to boot. So darned much of B.C. is all dumbled up it's interesting to speculate on just how large it would be if ironed out. Probably stretch all the way to Tokyo without any trouble. But driving across and up and down it on these spectacular fall days brings acute reminders of its variety and grandeur and glorious vistas. Some offend. Between Revelstoke and Golden one sees great swaths of clear-cut. They are so high up the mountain-sides the sheer logistics of such operations boggle the mind. But a beautiful thing is happening here in those great scars. Where the machines have criss- crossed, poplars have sprung up in the sesulting ruts, and in their golden glory have created with the dark remaining conifers gigantic astonishing plaids! We saw it happsning when we came down through the lower reaches, too, below Manning Park. We drove through: all the places with the funny names, Spuzzum and Ta Ta Creek and over Anar- chist Mountain and past the Spillimacheen and the Hoodoos and through Keremeos. All of them started with hopes and dreams — think of the connota- tions of the name _ Bridesville, which after 80 years is still . hud- dle of shacks and rusting machin- ery. You think of the expectations and all the hard work and the failed effort and it breaks your heart. An awful lot of it has changed, to a couple of natives who thought they knew this country. How many times did we say to each other, ‘‘This used to have a...”’ cr “At ihe end of this curve there was a...°? We went carefully over the ground in Kimberley, looking for lost youth, and came up quite a blank. It unsettles the psyche when the sites one remembers so clearly are quite literally dissolved into fic- tion. : We saw other things we hadn’t . reckoned with. We saw a man herding cattle with a Honda, for heaven’s sake: What do you sup- pose is his job description? And his herd was worth its weight in gold, surely — at least a couple of hundred white limousines follow- ing the leader. We also saw a yard full of resting Hamas, each head on its long neck like the business end of a periscope. We saw a Brahma bull standing: WHAT’S ON FOR SENIORS MONDAY Oct. 21-Seniors’ Birthday Party. Asleep in the hay is quite literally no longer possible. One would simply roll off. Pity. But the best and most satisfying of all were the gorgeous views of mighty eminences and the sumac burning red as accent for the massed golden cottonwoods and poplars and birch trees. For ex- clamation points, there were endless, wistfully optimistic elec- tion posters.
