40 - Sunday, February 24, 1991 ~ North Shore News SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING Global Day of Prayer ON FRIDAY, March 1, Christian people around the world will gather for the annual World Day of Prayer Service for the 104th time. In 1887, the Women’s Board of Home Missions of -the United States Presbyterian Church in- stituted a Day of Prayer for Home Missions. In 1922, women in Canada were invited to join U.S. women in prayer on the first Friday in Lent for the first Inter- national Day of Prayer. Today, the World Day of Prayer service is distributed to churches by international commit- tee members residing in 170 coun- tries. In Canada, the World Day of Prayer is sponsored by the Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada, which has representatives from 11 Christian denominations. Each year, the service is written by women from a different coun- try. This year’s theme is ‘‘On the Journey Together,’’ and was prepared by Kenyan women who travelled throughout their country collecting stories and experiences from the women they met. Kenya, on the equator in east Africa, has a population of 23.3 million, approximately 66 per cent of which is Christian. Twenty six per cent of Kenyans follow African traditional religions, while eight per cent are Muslim. Although women in Kenya are employed in all sectors, few are in high-level positions. However, there are over 10,000 women’s groups in Kenya, most of which operate in rural areas. Through them women have in- ititated income-generating projects and farming through cooperatives, enabling them to accumulate capi- tal through savings and set up their own credit societies. In North Vancouver, the World Day of Prayer Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the North Lons- dale United Church (3380 Lons- dale Ave.) and at Mount Seymour United (97! Berkley Rd.), and at 7 Rey.
