10 - Friday, July 6, 1990 - Read ‘green’ labels carefully From page 9 quick swing through the local grocery stores and write a column pointing out what's hot and what’s not when it comes to en- vironmentally sound grocery pur- chases. Hah! Was that ambitious! The bad guys aren’t so easy to spot anymore, and everyone’s growing sophistication about environmen- tal issues has Ied to some hard- to-answer questions. If most, for example, of our North Shore waste is*incinerated, should I worry less about the bulk of my packaging and more about the chemical reactions that would occur when it burns? Does it take more energy to recycle glass or plastic? And so on. The one conclusion that still stands firm is that reducing is more important than recycling or reusing. That said, 1 did manage to compile a few notes with the help of my eco-mom as we cruised the aisles of a Lynn Valley super- market: . «Minimally packaged frozen concentrate or powdered drinks . are better than buying huge jugs of juice. Westvale now produces frozen concentrate in all-metal, recyclable tins. ¢ All TV dinners are bad, con- sidering the throwaway plate(s) inside. If you buy them, look for ones with recyclable aluminum dinner trays. : «Ice cream — consider buying the large plastic buckets of ice cream since the buckets can be used around the house indefinite- ly. * Avoid packaged nails, hooks, household items, candles, etc. Buy them in specialty stores if that’s the only way you can avoid packaging. ® Unfortunately, everything from ketchup to olive oi! is now sold in squeezable plastic bottles. According to the latest Garbage magazine, studies are currently be- ing done on the harmful emissions thought to result from burning these bottles, and most people find it much easier to recycle and reuse glass than they do plastic. Glass botties can still be found for most items. * Anything sold in a_ blister pack (coated with plastic on a cardboard backing) is highly suspect. If the packaging is not strictly necessary, see if you can find an alternative. *Heinz baby food is now plastic-wrapping all of its individ- ual glass jars (‘‘for safety’’), but Gerber’s doesn’t, relying on a safety pop-up sea! instead. I’s much better, however, to buy a food mill and make your own baby food rather than going through zillions of glass jars. *® Warning: Read the labels of all the ‘‘Green’’ line of products carefully, as they are sometimes not particularly green at all. For example, ‘‘Green’’ cereal was labelled as such simply because it is good for you, not the planet. And the ‘‘Green’’ household cleanser didn’t appear to be biodegradable or chemically benign —~ the only reason it seem- ed to have a green designation was because it contains a bitter substance that discourages children from swallowing it. e Buy unbleached coffee filters over bleached ones. e Buy Avalon milk in the glass bottles, and Landliebe yogurt that comes in glass jars. «Paper towelling and tissue aren’t necessary. Cloths and newsprint substitute for the former, recycled-paper toilet paper for the latter.
