NEW ZALKO ADDITIONS Fitness is no phase for mom-to-be Dana IT’S 10 days awav from the due date, and they still haven’t decided on a name. PHEN BAR aw Report “T don't want a common name,” explains mother-to-be and fitness expert Dana ZaJko. “A common name can be nice but | want something different.’’ The possibility of a name- deciding contest has been discuss- ed, but appears to have been lett too late. ‘‘I might still do it,’’ she says in a mock threat. At 8% ionths pregnant, 26- year-old Dana looks newhere near the typical picture of a full-term mother-to-be. She maintains her routine of a daily 90-minute work-out, but avoids all forms of jumping, opting instead to work out on an exercise bike. Strenuous weight-lifting is also a no-no, ‘‘! wouldn’t want to have the baby right here,’’ she laughs, gesturing to the nearby Nautilus equipment. She says she has gained ‘‘a lot of weight’? but refuses to give specifics. Pickles and ive cream fai! to en- tice her. Dana, who previously avoided all red meat, now understandably can’t get enough of it. ‘1 crave meat. Dana met husband-to-be Ron in Vancouver in 1980 when she was in town visiting her parents. After three months together and a vaca- tion in Hawaii, they were married. He was 30, she was 20. | She admits that three months might seem to be a short time be- fore marriage, but maintains that it makes no difference. ‘‘I don’t think marriages fail because they're quick or fast — it depends on how much you work on it,’’ she explains. “There’s a whole lot of people who date for five years und marry and then get divorced. If you want it (marriage) there forever then you have to work at it.”’ When the couple started what is now the highly successful Zalko fitness empire, they had virtually no money and were promoting an unusual, untried product — aerobic fitness. “When we started we had to educate people about aerobics. “We used to get calls asking what acrobatics were,’’ she chuckles. Dana, who models in all of the company’s ads, refuses to believe she is a sex symbol. One of Zalko’s ads, showing a topless Dana from behind lifting weights, drew heavy fire from many women’s groups. If 1 wanted to be sexy then [’d turn around. “I'm trying to show what work- ing Out does to your figure."* Despite her pregnancy, Dana’s fast-paced schedule has not eased. Alternating between the Kit- silano centre and the newly opened North Vancouver facility, Dana barely has time to rest, as she jok- ingly says she can’t remember the last time she had a few minutes to relax, After months of preparation and an extensive remodelling job, the new International Plaza Hotel cen- tre opened Tuesday with Dana and Ron on hand to ensure all! was fit and trim. But when she can snatch a few minutes to relax, she likes to play with Tammy, her cocker spaniel, and go for long evening drives with husband Ron. “When I’m at home there's always things to do — dishes, cleaning and so on,’’ Dana la- ments. Although the Zalko fitness em- pire is successful — ‘‘We've been doing well since we opened’’ — the two live in a modest house in Kit- silano. They share the use of their 1984 Volvo. ‘‘We’re looking to move now,”’ Dana says, knowing the explanation is obvious. She maintains she has enjoyed her pregnancy. ‘‘All these stories See Fitness Page 21 Park Plaza Country Club Holdings Inc. (In Receivership) d.b.a.
