MUM OF THE YEAR Mother's Day Manners PAGE 14 She was a mother to many IT STANDS to reason that a Mother of the Year would like kids. By DAWN BURKE It’s probably safe to assume that a Mother of the Year would have spent a lot of time with kids. And Mother's of the Year are the kind of people who do good deeds in their spare time. Tina Cole fits the bill. Tina, a life-long North TINA COLE gets a congratulatory hug from her grandson, E.J. Cole, on being voted Mother of the Year by the Eagles Vancouver resident, has been named this year’s Mother of the year by the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The 72-year-old great- grandmother was honored Saturday at a dinner at the Eagles Hall for her many years of community service. In fact Tina has done so many things for the com- munity, she has a hard time temembering them all. In 1941 she started work- ing for Indian Affairs, and that was the same year she started taking in foster children. During the next seven years she had 37 foster children pass through her home: some for just a few hours, days or weeks and a few for up to a year. ‘‘They needed someone to look after them,’ is all Tina says about opening her heart and home to those children. While working for Indian Affairs, Tina acted as an escort. For 13 years she escorted Indian children from various far-flung parts of the province home from the hospital in Vancouver. Tina has fond memories of those days and the children she returned to parents who could ill afford to pick them up from the hospital. The children were NEWS ¢ photo Mike Wakatleld Club. Through the years she has been involved with sea cadets and air cadets and she’s made a career of fin- ding needed items at ruim- mage sales and delivering them to AA, Indian Affairs and the Ta-Ha Lodge, a rest home for native indians. While her children were in school she was an active member of the PTA and was on cali to assist the Health Nurse. She collected clothes to help out less fortunate people on the bread line and in 1975 she and some friends helped with the establish- ment of a home to rehabili- tate men. She remains in- volved with potlatches around the province. Tina has three children stiil, living and is grand- mother to 19, great-grand- mother to four and has three more great-grandchildren on the way. And more impor- tantly, she is a good friend to all who need her. Tina’s now officially retired but keeps busy doing anything and everything. She doesn’t think what she has done is so special. ‘“‘It’s nothing out of the ordi- nary,’’ she says. And she believes it.
