Here ‘‘Punks’’ rub shoulders with ‘‘Jocks’’, while *‘Head Bangers’’ hoot with laughter at the latest ‘‘Mod"’ trend. Even the most cursory in- vestigation brings to lhght fascinating fashion facts, the most important being, that style of dress and preference in music go hand tn hand While the Mods choose to listen to the hits of the 607s the “‘Head Bangers’) or “Metal Heads." enjoy the fast beat and depressing Intaes of the heavy metal the BOTS such as Priest, Maiden addition to REOU pS ren Judas Land Iron Beciter dn enjoying the music of par- ticular groups, individuals will also copy the dress and hair styles of their favorue musicians. In interviewing = students who,1| thought, wore punk styles, this writer soon was corrected and found they prefer to be called ‘‘avant garde."’ When asked why they cnoose this style over others, they claim that it 1s fun, an art form, and satisfies a wish to be in- dividualistic. These kids are certainly hard to miss, even in a crowded hall Their hair is Often multi-colored, spik- ed, tangled and shaved — sometimes all at the same time Hair may actually change colour 7 or 4 times a week! Punk clothing is tre quently second hand and over sized Black as the favorite col our, while fluorescent colours are also appropriate Pieces of fabric, resembling tournt quets are forcheads, tied legs, around and ATTY wrists. Chains of every description, most of them from hardware stores, com- bined with second hand rhinestones are used tn abun- dance. A final clue to identi- fying a punker is the many pierced holes in enher one or both ears. Sadly, students who are in- to punk fashions are too often judged solely on their appearance. While they are often good citizens and hard working students they com- plain of being on the receiv- ing end of cruel unsolicited attention when they are out in public. In sharp contrast to the Punks, the Jock element of the school presents a very wholesome, clean cut impres- sion. The students are com- pletely dedicated to athletics, often playing on three or four teams in a season, both in and out of school. Fashion ts notof prime importance tothis group; a good pair of jeans and rugby, polo or sweat shirts are all that these boys and girls require. The greatest cost in their war drobe 1s in footwear. Hightop runners or basket- ball shoes average around $85.00 per parr. Often different footwear 15 required for each = sport Jocks wear their hair short, as they frequéntly shower three times a day. Generally parents are supportive of this look. The challenge tor the Mod is to copy correctly and indetail the styles of the 60's. Footwear may be penny loafers, desert boots, bowling shoes or Chelsea boots. Both male and females wear nar- row legged trousers, button- down shirts, and cychng shirts. The accepted symbo! of being a Mod is a sweater or shirt made by Fred Perry, an English manufacturer of tennis wear, bearing a small laurel leaf logo. Mods prefer natural fibres and even shun leather. Outer wear consists of green army parka. Hair is cut short in **Perry Como" or ‘College Boy’’ style. The entire image projected 1s clean, tidy and=ultra- conservative. Anotner distinct fashion group, often at odds with the Mods, are those students who enjoy the heavy metal musical groups. These kids refer to themselves as Metal Heads, Head Bangers or Rockers. Jeans and jean jackets are popular, as are Jeather jackets.
