Rece| tion i A.ELePAGE, REAL ESTATE SERVICES LID Can you imagine! All that money! When old Tony retired, it was rumored he was set for life, and could live forever on what he had saved. It was rumored he had $10,000. Yes, $10,000, enough to live on for the rest of his hfe, in fact, we thought, forever. But that was 40 years ago. At that time, as an ap- prentice, I was earning 20¢ perhour, the normal work week was six days, 8'2 hours per day, and with overtime, many a week saw us putin 55 hours per week (no extra pay for overtime). Top wages in the printing industry (one of the better paid) were 80¢ per hour, so, for 50 hours, you would earn $40.00 per week, and that would be an above-average wage. Old Tony had $10,000, and if it was invested at 4%, that would give him $4,000 per year, or almost $80 per week, double what the top wage earmers were getting. He was set for life, forever (we thought). We find that thinking still prevails today. Many people ihe NO bi say: “I've got savings, a pen- sion, plus the Canada Pen- sion Plan, and Old Age Pen- sion, and all these combined will give me $15,000 or $20,000 per year for the rest of my life.” Maybe it will - but will it be enough? Could “Old Tony” live to- day on his $80 per week ($4,000 per year)? If inflation were to aver- age just 6% per year (it's av- erage over the past 15 years is just under 8% - 7.91% to be exact) this means that if you retire, and live just ten years, you will need $26,580 per year to match what $15,000 would buy at retire- ment, or $35,800 to match what $20,000 would have bought. The only answer to a de- cent retirement is to have assets of your own, and to have them invested where they have a chance to give All that money, but... PAUL ROCKEL you an increasing income to keep pace with inflation. We saw a “chart” the other day that compared a 10% investment with an in- vestment fund. Actually it was two-sided, and did the comparison with two differ- ent investment funds. vs. the 10% investment. It showed that the “cav- tious” person who invested $100,000 at 10% 15 years ago, and only needed $9,000 per year to live, but in- creased the “income” the amount inflation went up each year, now needs $25,501 per year to match | that $9,000 15 years ago. And in ..... June/83 (15% years) that person ran out of money. However, another person who put it in the in- vestment fund, and increas- ed the payments by inflation each year, is getting the $25,501 in 1983, and still has $314,197 “left.” JUST ANOTHER ANSWERING SERVICE Mfore people relvon Wes- Tels superior ansu ering serice than any other because courteous, efficrent operators who keep vou in touch up to 24 hours a day 7 days aweek are anh the heginning We've founda way of “personalizing” our answering service to meet your needs for business of residence References are gladly provided Wes.
