B6 - Wednesday, April 13, 1983 - North Shore News Vancouver Whitecaps ’83 LOOKING FORWARD TO OCTOBER A decade, a dome and Soccer Bowl There are three things the Whitecaps want to have “going” for them this year. Two are already ac- complished facts. One, the team is “going” into~their tenth season in the North American Soccer League, and two, they will be “going” into the exciting new domed B.C. Place in mid-June, the first domed stadium in Canada. The third “going” they want, is to be going to Soccer Bowl! on October Ist, as hosts and participants in the first ever Soccer Bowl to Brunch & Burgers be played in Vancouver. While the number three may be a bit tough to ac- complish, players and Management are quietly confident that they will be trotting out onto the ar- tificial turf as home town favorites come the beginning of October in front of 60,000 fans. The number 10 edition of the Whitecaps is a familiar look, but with a few key differences. The core of the team is stable and just that much more familiar with each other and the few SUNDAYS FROM 11:30 A.M. Discover the “NEW” BLACK SHEEP Entertainment: Wed. With the signing of Fran and Frans (O'Brien and Thijssen) in the middle of the field, it could signal a new and stronger attack coming through the middle. Couple the Irish and Dutch international with the ageless Peter Lorimer, last year’s Most Valuable Player and ex-Scottish In- ternational and you are looking at one of the most potent midfields anywhere in North America. And if you throw in either Mike Sweeney or David HEADING FOR THE ball, Alan Taylor races past his opponent last season in regular league action. If Taylor can re- main healthy for the ‘83 season, he is expected to add more than a few goals in the Whitecap cause. Taylor scored the lone goal Sunday against the Montreal Manic in the Caps 1-0 win in Victoria. And on the back line, Dave Watson, the 65 times English International will anchor a solid defensive core of Bobby Lenarduzzi, Pierce O'Leary, Mark Nickeas, Paul Nelson, Shaun Lowther . take your pick. The answer was indirect: “Remember Roger Kenyon?” “Yes.” “A pussycat.” (Compared to Watson). And with the quixotic Tino Lettieri in goal with P.J. Johns fighting him every step of the way, it would seem that the only question mark for the "Caps at this stage of the game is the front line. Mind you, with Carl Valentine, Alan Taylor and Peter Beardsley up there, it doesn’t seem too weak. However, the locals will be making an addition up front. Whether it will be the German international Horst Hrubech or someone else remains to be seen, but it would appear that this striker will be the last ad- dition to the 1983 version of the ’Caps. All in all, it’s looking pretty good for the Whitecaps this year. Club officials and players would like nothing more than a hat- trick: a decade, a dome and a Soccer Bowl champion- ship. Sort of satisfying way to wrap up the first ten years.
