C2 - Sunday, March 27, 1983 - North Shore News oo early While Canadians can be thankful their children no longer suffer from starvation and malnutrition, they may still be risking = their children’s future health by imposing abnormal diets on them. Doctors have long known that poor nutnition in infancy has a lasting influence on an individual's health and physiology. A protein defi- ciency, for example, tends to stunt growth. Now some doctors are speculating that subtle ab- _ ition “i = such as solid food at too young an age, may be con- nected to adult health prob- lems. A Canadian biw- chemist, Dr Joseph Angel, is studying this question in his lab at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Angel says the average infant can live solely on milk until about six) months of age, at which time tt ts TIME tQern 12 avon ' pm 2 gen apn 4 pwn THURS 10 am 10 30 am 't am | gm 2 @pm FAL 10 am 32 NON t? noon | pen 2'(8 pm 2? @h pm Jpm 4 orn WEST VANCOUVER MEMORIAL LIBRARY 1983 BOOKMOBILE SCHEDULE Library Phone: usually necessary to begin adding-.solid food to the baby’s diet. But a survey taken in major industrialized countries shows that 80 per cent of babies were already eating solid food at one month, and0 per cent were eating solid food at two months. One-half of the food energy (calones) in milk 1s contributed by fats, whereas the caloric content in solid food is supplied mostly by starch. In laboratory expen- ments, Dr. Angel has found that when rats are taken off y. their livers make up for the loss in fat by producing an unusually high amount of their own fat. “The rats look perfectly healthy and are no heavier than other rats, but there ts this abnormally Ingh fat con tent in their livers.” says Dr Angel “Moreover, the abaormal = fat) production persists into adult life” PLACE € oquamaft HReadon.o Cloth 4 € aqaameal) Apartmonts KRiwarn Lodge (hoe ltosnetanserdd Patrons onty) Hiwanis Memidone (Covlyord aon) Capitan Motte Mart Beaucn HR Lodge Park Hoya lower Wipjterwescad bho Wevqzhev were ec rtd bite rehg eee C8 creo Sa pevvent mc os av eed seater Oily) Moya Avomm & (htorsaanhoe May! Dr. Ron Richardson will be leading a workshop on anger on Saturday, April 9, 1983 from 9:45 am to 4:00 pm at the North Lonsdale United Church, 3380 Lonsdale, North Vancouver, B.C. “Some of us are unaware of our anger, or we are uncomfortable with it. Others of us are consumed by it and unable to control it,” Richardson says. The purpose of this work- shop is to learn about our anger — what it is about and how we inhibit or misuse it and to find more con- Structive and helpful ways to use it in improving our lives and relationships. Please call the North Shore Living and Learning Office at 926-5495 to learn more about this workshop. ask for Carolyn or Doreen. ive a celebration of spring. Easter is Sunday, April 3.
