wizard, is disappointing. He
says his lines audibly and
impressively, which is more
than about half the cast can
manage, and makes the most
of the humorous matérial
available to him, but his
Prospero lacks depth. For
the Tempest to be
emotionally satisfying.

Prospero must be more than
a fairy godfather, running
around waving a wand. He
must go through his own
change from a supernatural
force bent on vengeance, to
a human being, willing to
forgive. Pinsent fails to make
this development at all

More of a storm in a teacup

character is warm = and
endearing, while — still
completely out of this world.
Her presence, and that of
her troup of leafy spirits,
save what could be a dismal
evening.

This group, in their exotic

costumes, prancing around |

credible:

Jennifer Austin, who plays
Miranda, Prospero's
daughter, is merely an-
noying. Her one joke per-
formance involves the fact
that she has been without
male companionship for
some time, excepting her
father, and puberty has set
in. She and her prince
charming, Ferdinand,
played by David Marr, spend
most of the production
stanng hyper-thyroidly into
each other's eyes.

The other humans in the
cast are remarkably un-
remarkable. They make a
ternble hash of the opening

‘ seene, garbimg their fines,

rendering a_ potentially
terrifying moment farcical
with their incoherent cater-
waulling.

This all sounds very nasty.
But while the Tempest fails
as theatre, it succeeds
wonderfully as spectacle.
This is due to the absolutely
delightful performance of
Camille Mitchell as Anel,
Prospero’ unearthly | ser-
vant. Arie! is often played
very coldly. to suggest his
complete separation from
humanity, but Mitchell's

the lovely, colourful set, are
truly magical. Most spec-
tacular is a massive,
fluorescent puppet, used for
a supernatural marriage
pageant called up by
Prospero for the lovers. It
entrances a modern
audience usually bored by
such renaissance frolicking.

Added to that pleasure is
Mankuma’s Caliban, Ariel's
monstrous counterpan. He
iS a sympathetic and easily
forgiven monster who is
somewhat wronged by
Prospero. He is far more
sulky child than savage
beast, and is irresistibly
funny and pitiable.

The accompanying music.
composed by John Gray for
the production, ts admirably
dreamy and enchanting. It is
used with taste and humour
by director Timothy Bond.
and both Mankuma and
Mitchell have strong voices
In fact, if Bond had spent
half as much time creating
theatre as he obviously has
creating atmosphere, The
Tempest could be a truly
marvellous show. Pity

The Tempest will contgnue
at the Vancouver PlayHouse
until March 12.
