You decide to relax, have a bit of fun and do an ‘ocean- crossing’ over the weekend. But you've let your little yacht sit out there, all winter and now, you can "t remember if the bottom i is red or blue. Before you yell, “Anchors aweigh,” I suggest a shape up time. And the first thing which is called for is a haul- out. If your boat fits onto a standard trailer, you're in luck. Even if you don’t own one, renting one, -or. better yet, finding a friend to lend you theirs, isn’t much of a problem. If you are skipper of a slightly larger vessel, be prepared to pay a tidy sum. Many marinas provide haul-out service and rates vary according to travel-lift and operators, but if you can get away with under $250 for in and out, and rent during dry-dock, you can consider yourself fortunate. Now, I can think of better ways to spend moncy, and no doubt, sd can you. But pulling her out and doing some work now, can save you Gme, moncy, and a lot of headaches. A friend of mine hasn't scraped the marine growth off his yawl’s bottom for close to three years. Each year Fred will have an ex- cuse. Either its the weather, his kid's birthday party, or a sprained index finger He suffers from the mentalhty that what you don't know, won't hurt you. His logic is that if he doesn't see it, the growth isn't there. But just spending a day aboard the boat, shows the seriousness of the problem. She's dif- ficult to steer, won't point, and takes a long time coming about. But most tragic, is the effect on its performance - there’s so much speed lost! And power-boats are even greater victims. With the high price of fuel, running a motor-yacht can be an expensive hobby. Now add to that, marine growth which slows its speed and increases gasoline consumption, the cost is astronomical. So it makes good sense to get your boat out and clean your bottoms. Once she’s all clean and dry, make a close inspection of the hull. Blistering body- filler should be sanded off and redone. Suspicious looking underwater fittings “can be re-caulked with para seal And now 1s the time to decide whether your ship could do with a coat of paint, On Rhapsodia, my 58 “ketch, T used an occan bluc polyurethane paint’ It was over two years age, and the paint as sQll good So each Seven Seas . It may be that a quart of paint is all you need to get her looking pretty again. A word of caution. When applying that smelly stuff called anti-fouling paint always wear protective clothing. Cover your head with a hat or scarf, and wear an old pair of coveralls. Buy some inexpensive dish- washing gloves, and be prepared:to throw out all the clothing articles once you've finished the job. emember, anti-fouling is a poisonous substance formulated to in- hibit marine growth. Your fellow yhachties may laugh at you, but you'll have the last laugh, when they see their dermatologist bill. Once you're back in water, how does the wood- work look? If its beginning to look dull, a fresh coat of oil will get it sharp again. If you're using varnish prepare yourself for scraping and sanding. One of the reasons I prefer oil! If dark blotches have appeared, you'll have to scratch them out - till you hit good wood. And now your boat looks absolutely marvelous, and you're all set to try your sea legs. But wait. Have you cleaned your battery ter. minals? Added water where to was low? How about the clectric panel? Any signs of Dine aboard shop on an atmosphere of luxury and breaststroke, backstroke. And what of the engine? Unlike relatives, thumping sounds do not go away when they are ignored. So call 4 mechanic and get a diagnosis, before surgery is required, i.e.: new motor. Engines are temper- mental beasts. If youre nice to them, they'll treat you good. So be kind to it.
