By BILL CORBETT CALGARY (UPC) - Richard Comely is out to fight the evil forces of what he calls a real-life global conspiracy -with comic book hero. The commercial graphic artist believes the world’s most powerful bankers, corporate executives and political leaders are bent on creating and. controlling a global government. His contribution to . ex- posing the ‘‘conspiracy” is a © science fiction magazine that begins publishing this July. The magazine, called “Star Rider and the Péace — Machine”, has. the familiar muscle-bound comic-book ‘the aid of a space-age heroes outwitting dastardly intentions of power-hungry villains. But his product differs from seven or eight similar ones in North America by | mixing fiction: with a foreboding that a plot is afoot to shackle the world’s people under one authority. Typically, in one series, a young scientific’ genius travels -back.-29 years. in .a time capsule to fight the conspirator's plans to incite - a world war that will spawn a world government in his own time. ; ~ ‘Magazine. To add weight to ‘the fantasy, Comely says, the will include editorials and non-fiction articles ‘conspiracy’s spread. - The 30-year-old father of six hopes this exposure will spur on his young readers to read in-depth books on the subject. . Comely doesn’t look like a freedom fighter in his white shirt and tie. But his youthful looks and soft voice belie an inner conviction. He’s a. practising Mormon and says the Church of Latter Day Saints has no quarrel with his espousal of the conspiracy theory. Quite a few members of his church, he says, privately hold similar views. “Most people think high documenting the - financiers are against socialism and communism. It has nothing to do with ideology,” said Comely, expanding on the theory in his work room at a Calgary news distributing company where he does some freelance work. | “They're working to- establish ruler’s law in the world again. And because of the apathy in the world, especially in this country, they've got a free rein.” Comely is hoping his message also carries a profitable punch. He's still paying off debts from his first comic-book venture, Captain Canuck, the tales of a former Mountie endowed with supernatural powers, which collapsed earlier this year. A21 - Wednesday, July 8, 1981 - North Shore News Captain Canuck was born in Comely’s native Winnipeg in 1975. He perished shortly thereafter but was brought back to life, along with two new partners, in 1979, after his creator mioved to Calgary. It was a brief resurrection because Captain Canuck went down for good in early 1981. Comely said sales were high but blamed the comic’s demise on poor management decisions, such as printing 100,000 copies of the first issue instead of *60,000. “They ended up being stacked in a warehouse,” he said. Comely is undertaking some of the drawing, but 90 per cent of the artwork in his .. new project is being farmed out to studios in the United — gq os . : wy plot | States and the Phillipines. ‘That will free him to develop story plots and market the magazine. He is the sole owner of the ‘new venture and has about $15,000 in financial backing. He estimated it will cost about $20,000 to produce and distribute the first issue, and with some moncy already in from _. ad- vertisements ‘and pre-sales, predicts. a steady cash flow by he third issue.
