A8-Sunday News, July 13,1980 bears, raccoons or even crows, whom do you call for help? The question occupied North Vancouver District council for some time at their regular meeting Monday evening — and the answer they had all along wasn't too helpful. Jurisdiction over wildlife lies with the provincial government under _ the Wildlife Act — and _ the wildlife control officer can be reached at 4465 Sumas Mountain, Abbotsford, 435- 4137. The issue was raised in response to a letter from Marion Shipley of Viewlynn Drive who’ spent three days seeking help to get rid of a raccoon which had _ torn shingles off her roof. Mrs. Shipley said in her letter that she was con- If you're bothered by = tinually referred to the game warden, but “he really can do littl. His traps are usually out, the demand is so great ... he has not the staff, facilities nor the authority to truly help. The municipality controls the use of fire arms.” She complained in a telephone interview later that there was “no direct route” for obtaming assistance with wildlife problems and said she knew of many people who had experienced similar difficulties. Council] moved to ensure that the SPCA, the RCMP and the fire department have the wildlife control officer's phone number and to write to the officer advising him of the complaints council has received, asking him to respond. Alderman Mary Segal said she is concerned that the wildlife office is “grossly understaffed” ande short of equipment, but council did not see fit to write to the provincial minister in this regard at this time. Alderman John Lakes quoted a radio broadcaster who had _ suggested that people were looking to governments to “protect them from the slings and arrows of everyday life.” “There has to be a limit!" said Lakes. The municipal solicitor quoted the response of pest control companies to enquires on the control of crows: “No one can successfully get md of crows — they are too smart. Have you tried a scarecrow or a stuffed owl to get them off your property?” ‘Busy with God, “We were so busy ren- dering unto God that we forgot to render unto Caesar,” Jim Crook told North Vancouver District council Monday evening. Crook was representing Deep Cove United Church, which wants to build an addition to house its Sunday School, AA meetings, youth groups and other activities. Although he was given a package of information on siting amendments and building permits several months ago, somehow the significance of the material didn't sink in and now the church would ordinarily be facing about 15 weeks of legal red tape before building could commence. However, District council is trying to speed things up and it is hoped that final acceptance of the proposal ot about Caesar’ can be achieved by mid- August. “We had foolishly hoped that the wing would be ready by September,” said Crook. But a public hearing and other bylaw procedures cannot be bypassed: it would be illegal, he was informed by council. “We are not trying to dodge anything; we want to comply with everything,” conceded Crook. Griffin Centre ready The new addition to North Vancouver's William Griffin Pool is to be called the William Griffin Community Centre and is expected to be ready for use by mid-July. North Vancouver District council approved the name at its regular meeting Monday evening. The new facility will house the universal] gymnasium area for activities such as volleyball, badminton ‘and fitness classes and, upstairs, arts and crafts programs will be conducted. The centre will be of- ficially opened by Diastnet Mayor Don Bell No date has yet been set. Look for the Book “MAZZERCISE” (published by Bantam) t Your Local Bookstore!!!
