ewish association conducting survey An extensive survey of all Jewish families living in North and West Vancouver will soon be conducted by the North Shore’s only Jewish congregation. During the week begin- ning April 27, members of the North Shore Jewish Community Association will be telephoning as many Jewish families as possible on the North Shore, asking them tO answer a compre- hensive questionnaire on their interests, and their social, educational and religious needs. Based on these answers, the association plans to formulate a program that will serve the majority of North Shore Jewish families’ requirements. The survey comes at a turning point in the association's history: Not only has its membership increased sharply in recent months, but members are showing greater community awareness. The impending merger of the association with the North Shore Hebrew School will also lead Free cam Summer camp is _ fast approaching. These to increased youth activities within the association. Founded in January 1974, the association began as a small group on the North Shore. Their first premises were a small ranclier-type house in West Vancouver, converted into a synagogue by hard work and dedication of the members themselves. At the first High Holiday services, the congregation had to borrow a Sefer Torah (scroll containing the first Five Books of the Bible). But over the years, they acquired their own Torah, their Ark, candelabrum and other furnishings required for a Jewish place of wor- ship. Nearly all were donated by various mem- bers. The North Shore Jewish congregation has always enjoyed a warm spirit of co- Operation. It has always followed egalitarian prin- ciples — all members are called to the podium regardless of their material contributions. For the first four years, the monthly Sabbath ser- vices were led by a member, Dr. Hy Ross, assisted by various other members. The Conservative religious format was directed by Horst Sachs, the association’s incumbent president and its founder. Rabbi Siegel’s enthusiastic and spontaneous approach to religion sparked a warm response in the congregation. His monthly family-oriented Friday evening services, followed by a communal wgupper, enjoy attendances of up to 100 people. Since Rabbi Siegel undertook the congregation’s ministry, as many as 130 people have attended the High Holiday services.
