Kitchen secrets shared in local’s cookbook

SCRUBBING DILLS in the washing machine in prepara-
tion for pickling is just one of the tips to be found in Judy
Zaste’s cookbook, Stolen Secrets.

“It saves hours and I’ve only
had one broken pickle in years,"*
says the Lynn Valley author, who

wrote, published and distributed
the book herself.

Into its second printing, Stolen
Secrets reveals the private culinary
treasures of Zaste’s friends, family
and co-workers, interspersed with
preparation hints gleaned from the
author’s years of experience in the

tun copies sold out now, Zaste
plans to have a second run of
about 2,000 professionaily printed.

**A second volume of the
cookbook is definitely being plan-
ned. I have really enjoyed doing
this,’ says Zaste.

Stolen Secrets has sold well at

local craft fairs and is available at
Baron’s Books at Lonsdale Quay,
the Readers’ Retreat, Quality
Meats and Venice Bakery.

Zaste, who is originally from
Dawson Creek, has lived with her
family in Lynn Valley for nearly 20
years.

The book features easy-to-
prepare, kitchen-tested recipes that
require few specialized ingredients.

Some of her favorites include
Turkey Soup, Broccoli Bisque, a
fancy sandwich recipe from a
friend and a Crumb Cake recipe
(circa 1930) that came from some-
body’s mother.

Harder-to-prepare dishes, such
as cabbage rells, are illuminated
with detailed istructions.

An administration services man-
ager at the North Vancouver Rec-
reation Commission, Zaste got the

§ inspiration to do the book about

: three years ago when she started to
put together some recipes for her
four grown children.

Zaste took a course on produc-
ing cookbooks, but found it
discouraging because it warned of
the enormous amount of work in-
volved. ©.

“They were right — it is a lot
more work than you would
think,’ says Zaste.

And work she did, starting with
writing down, standardizing aud
testing each recipe she had col-
lected. Zaste typed out her finished

affair, with her sister-in-law Ingrid
Zaste pitching in and husband
Cliff giving.a hand with the col-
lating and binding. Their daughter
