North Shore — Credit Union's (NSCU) Charitable Foundation teamed up with GardenWorks and North Shore recycling to plant the Salvation Army’s “Garden of Giving” on May 24. As a wrap-up for NSCU’s month-long annual fundrais- ing efforts the garden was planted using donated soil, plants and labour from the various organizations. Meryll Goodman, market- ing manager for NSCU, helped. with the _plaating. “Everyone had a good time,” she said. Blessed with sunny weath- er'and about 15 volunteers, the day-long project saw an- overhaul of the landscape outside the building at 12th and Lonsdale. But Goodman said it was- n’t just a day of fun in sun, rather “it was about business- " es coming together to help out in the community.” Although this was the first time NSCU has planted a gar- den, they hope to make the “Garden of Giving” an annu- al event by sprucing up a dif- ferent flowerbed in the com- munity each year. WITH the recent upsurge of interest in perennials, gar- deners will be pleased to know that Lone Pine Publishing has released an excellent book: Perennials for British Columbia. as with other Lone Pine publica- tions, this book is in a 14x22 cm handbook format. The authors quickly define what perennials are and how to grow and get the best results from a wide variety of species. They give good practical advice on svil conditions, plant selection, propagation, cultural techniques and pest problems. A short six-page pictorial index at the front of the book is great for quick identification and a page reterence to the main write-up. The back of the book has a very detailed, colour- coded reference chart for flower colour, blooming season, height, hardiness, light requirements and soil conditions. Two to four pages are devoted to cach of the 95 basic species listed which includes a good selection of excellent photographs, both close-ups and in garden settings. Perennials for British Columbia should become a standard reference for both home gardeners and commercial landscapers in the future. —— Ray Jonsson © “Golf Coast of Canada | / FREE FERRY!
