John Goodman This Weck Editor Solmg@nsnews.com JAZZ guitarist Ken Aldcroft has written a New score to accompany Buster Keaton’s silent classic The General. Keaton's film, considered one of his greatest works, was shot in Orcgon in 1927, The story was based on an incident in the Civil War where a stolen locomotive was taken through enemy territory. The silent comic rooted his material in American culture and Aldcroft uses this as a springboard for his own origi- nal jazz compositions. Although the actual content will take us far outside the ret- “ erences of Keaton’s work. “The influence came from different groups I was listening to,” says _ Aldcroft. “Bill Frisell’s Quartet, John Zorn’s News for Lulu wio and a little bir of Jimmy Guiffre’s group with Jim Hall. None of the bands have bass or drums — those are the kinds : «of things I’ve been listening to for the past cou- - ple of years. I knew I wanted to write in that capacity for guitar and horns.” ; On Sunday night at the Havana Gallery on ~ Commercial Drive Aldcroft will co-produce the event with Chris Ellstrand. “He’s done this kind of thing before and we decided it would . be a good time to do another one.” There will nding & they're bursting at the Seam ‘Activa Panorama Sacket Reg: 229.95, Sale 119.95 “ ‘Aetien Vortex Jacket - Reg: 169.95, Sate 79.95 may AL Ur Firatty Helmet Light ~ leg: 149.95, Sale 109.95 JAZZ guitarist Ken Aldcroft’s quartet at the Havana Gallery Sunday. be nwo shows at 7 and 9 p.m. The ensemble, made up of some of the city’s premier jazz musicians, includes Brian Harding on trombone, Francois Houle on clarinet, and John Korsrud on trumpet with the composer on guitar. “The writing is mixing song form with written and improvised music,” says Aldcroft. “In the writing 'm trying to have some open sec- tions to let the movie shape the improvising but P’'m also trying to set up moods with the compositions.” Keaton’s film was chosen for a number of reasons, “1 watched a couple of his movies. ] tiked the fact that The General was a longer film so it gives you more time to develop the music. It focusses on Americana-type melodies —almost folky — using a bit of blues and stuff.” & Clarinctist Francois Houle is part of another major music event scheduled for next week.
