Granted, there is a grain of
truth in-each of those
_ -objections. But, examined in

4 its total context, the benefits —

of skiing far outweigh its
very few drawbacks.

For every example cited as
to how the sport can be
expensive, dangerous, time-
consuming or cold, there are
a score of valid rebuttals.

. Cost? At perhaps $200 for

a complete set of new alpine:
' equipment and clothing (half -

that for cross-country), the
original investment in skiing
can be higher than in other
implement sports like tennis,
curling or golf. 7

But it’s a darn sight
cheaper to get started in
skiing that it is in sailing,
scuba diving or camping. As
for the $8 to $10 for an
all-day lift ticket, that is
comparable to the green fees
for 18 holes of golf, one
hour’s court fee for tennis,
dinner for one in a good
restaurlant or a ticket to an
NHL hockey game.

_ Danger? Skiing does have
its share of accidents, but the
. vast majority are caused by
‘carelessness, faulty equip-
ment, fatigue and poor
conditioning, all of them
causes that can easily be
avoided. What’s more, safe-
ty council figures show that
driving, swimming. walking
on the street or riding an
elevator can also be danger-
ous. So can simply staying at
home, where thousands are
_ihjured every year.

With swimming and boat-
ing, skiing is. one of the
most safety-conscious of all
mass-participation sports.
With today’s modern release
bindings, careful hill groom-
ing and close supervision by
ski patrollers trained in first
aid, skiing is not a dangerous
sport as long as the skier
doesn't take needless risks.

Cold? Again, a Canadian
mountaintop in mid-July can
be chilly, but with today’s
insulated ski ciothing there is
no reason to suffer with cold.
Besides, those body
numbing days are far fewer
than you'd think, despite the
mind-numbing complaining
so many radio announcers do
whenever the temperature
goes below freezing.

Quilted jackets and pants
have taken most of the sting
out of the cold, as has the
insulating foam in gloves and
ski boots. On the few days
when the mercury threatens
to disappear altogether, a
face mask is) adequate
protection for the only
exposed part of the anatomy.

With a chmate hike ours, it
scems strange that so many
people make themselves
‘miserable by hibernating
“indoors and carping about
winter, The sag part is, most
have never even tri¢d to lake
advantage of what the scason
has to offer.

Yearning to be in Florida
won't make the winter any
happier. Skiing can, and its
well worth a try. Especially
since it may be cheaper.
