14 — Wednesday, April 22, 1998 — North Shore News WV board rethinks survey involvement — Catherine Barr Contributing Writer _ West Vancouver's partic- ipation in the contro- versial McCreary Adolescent Health Survey is still not a done deal. According to West Vancouver District 45 school board chairman Clive Bird, the board will wait for an informa- tion report from Geoff Jopson, Director of Curriculum and Staff Development, before proceeding. “The survey would not be done until the report comes back,” said Bird. Jopson’s report will detail how the survey is to be admin- istered. _ This, according to Bird, will Plants Galore] give the board “a better under- standing (of) time and resources.” “It’s another picce of intor- ination that the board feels it needs to have prior to actually putting the survey in motion,” he said. The approval of the motion came on the heels of a motion made by trustee David Stevenson, which called for the survey to be completed by stu- dent volunteers outside of classroom hours. But Stevenson’s motion — was deteated in a narrow 2-2 vote. This means the board’s February resolution to partici- pate in the survey still stands pending the outcome of Japson’s information report. Bird has opposed the sur- vey trom the start. He openly admits to tecling uncomfort- able about exposing students to what he calls questionable subject matter. He said he personally sup- ported Stevenson’s failed mation because he saw it as a “reasonable compromise” to an otherwise all or nothing sit- uation. “Students that felt that they wanted to participate could do so, but it would not be pre- sented essentially as a district initiative,” he said. When asked if the board was trying to employ stali tac- tics, Bird said: “One thing to bear in mind is thar there is an existing motion that we (the board) participate. And what . we are doing now is looking at additional information prior to going forward.” The McCreary survey asks students i in Grades 7 to 12 to AT.
