Facing

Points to remember
about handling velvet

Before cutting velvet, make
sure that the pattern is a good
fit. Velvet shows needle marks
that have been unpicked. I
therefore recommend trying

the pattern on muslin first.

When cutting the pattern,

pattern pieces to follow the
nap of the fabric.

Always press velvet on the
wrong side of the fabric using

your steam iron at mid-tem-
perature, barely touching the
fabric. I finger’ press most
seams and let the steam do the
rest. .

Finishing the garment

Stitch both the bust fitted
darts and the waist fitted darts.
Stitch side seam and back seam
leaving about a 45 cm or
(18”) opening to sew in the

Sew the straps and facing in
place. If you prefer to line your
dress, cut the lining exactly the
same as the pattern. Sew all
the seams and the darts and
press. Attach the lining on
Line Al - B and then’sew the
velvet facing to it. ¢

The length of the dress is
your choice. If you choose to
add a slit to the back of the
dress, cut an extra 5 cm (2”) of
fabric at the centre back seam
where the slit will be located,
to accommodate the seam
allowance you will need.

For a less fitted look, omit -
sewing the waist darts.

Trim such as satin ribbon
can be added for an even more
customized look,
