DOGATHON

The 8th annual Variety club Dogathon will be
held Saturday, April 29th at Mahon Park in
North Vancouver. Dog owners and dog lovers
are encouraged to sign up family, friends, and
sponsors to pledge money per lap as the
participants walk their dogs around Mahon
Park track to raise money for British Columbia’s
children with special needs.

The day will feature a fashion show for dogs,
novelty races, contests, agility shows, and
demonstrations. There will be mascots on hand
to entertain the kids, refreshments and prizes,
and fun for the whole family.

Last year, the Dogathon raised money to
purchase and train a service dog for Alicia
Calder of Fort St. John.

WHERE WORMS COME FROM |
AND WHY WE VACCINATE —

Q: Where do worms come from?

Dr. G: Worms that infect our dogs and
cats come from two places. One
source is eating grass with larvae on
it. These have hatched from eggs
passed in the stool of an infested cat
or dog. Pets that munch on grass are
prone to worms.

Second, worms can also be
contracted from eating intermediate
hosts such as fleas, birds, and
rodents. We often see tapeworm
infestations in pets with fleas.

infections are seen with unfaltering
tegularity. These respiratory infection
cause sneezing, runny eyes, and

just by keeping its vaccines up

Dr. J: We still see pets suffering from
infectious diseases that can be
prevented. The problem is, many pet
owners do not realize the importance
of vaccinations.

The incidence of infectious disease in
the pet population is directly related
to the number o! unvaccinated pets.
The main reason is the false belief
that dogs and cats are protected for
fife with just one set of “shots”. They
need vaccines each and every year to
ensure optimal immunity.

A viral disease that causes vomiting
and diarrhea and often kills pups
under 3 months old is parvovirus.
There have been ongoing cases of
“parvo” in Surrey. As well, Kamloops
