rejoice in the revelation that
the swirling rumors of the
good doctors drug-induced
demise are unfounded.

Volume Four of the poiitically
charged Gonzo Papers — entitled
Better Than Sex, Confessions af a
Political Junkie — is in bookstores.
and with it Thompson roars back
intu the heart of those who miss his
uniaue style of wilderness journal-
ism.

And to disprove the old adage of
teaching an old dog new tricks,
Thompson offers up a book borrow-
ing heavily from the Generation-X-
style of sidebar pieces and floating
graphics. (The striking difference.
however, is that Thompson's side-
bars ure xeroxed faxes from Bill
Clinton and James Carville, while
Douglas Coupland stuck to defini-
tions of “McJob”.)

After flogging your way through
his usual setting pieces (4 quote
from the U.S. constitution, an Edgar
Allan Poe poem, a William S.
Burroughs quote), Thompson gets
right down to business in the first
chapter as he decries the fact that he
is, once again, being dragged into a
national political election cam-
paign. The U.S. presidential elec-
tion of 1992.

The original Gonzo papers —

also known as Fear and Loathine
on the Campaign Trail -~ chroni-
cled Thompson's counter-culture
view of Deniocratic lightweight
George MeGovern and his failed
altempe to usurp the Republican
doinination of Richard Milhouse
Nixon.

The fourth volume of the jour-
ney revisits the presidential stage 20
years later and many of the original
cust of characters — Nixon,
McGovern, Carter, Reagan — make
camec appearinces, However, reud-
ers of the doctor's work will be
pleased to know that Thompson
tlso aims his metaphor-heavy
artillery on politicians who were
fortunate nat ia have been niaking
hay while Thompson was more pro-
lific. Perot. Bush, Schwarzkopf.
Thatcher, and of course, Bill
“Bubba” Clinton.

Indeed, it is the former governor
of Arkansas (a state Thompson
likens to Brazil, populated by “just
another gang of wild boys wanting
to gouge a living out of the land")
who gets the rayal treatment in
Thompson's latest book.

Or is it Clinton bowing to
Thompson?

Clinton's successful bid for the
White House represents the first
administration staffed by people
who grew up during Thomeson’s
literary rise. To many of taem —
judging from the numerous faxes
sent to the dactar’s Ow! Farm com-
pound from the White House —
Hunter S. Thompson holds a place
of reverence.
