THE SEW-IT-SEAMS | sewing,
craft and needle arts show has
worked hard to assemble talented
artists, designers and seamsiresses
from’ around North America to
provide a wide variety of educa-
tional seminars,

The seminars are targeted to all
levels of expertise, be it beginner
or advanced, and local involve-
ment includes something for
everyone.

Maiwa Handprints

Maiwa- Handprints has two
retail locations on Granville (sland
and a third in West Vancouver.
This company is well known for
‘its many and varied instructional
classes held at its Yaletown pro-
duction studio.

They have a mail-order cata-
logue for people who can’t make
it into. their areas. Maiwa is a
must for any fibre artist. Their

Explore the exciting world of
fabric painting and dyeing. The
Maiwa . Handprint artisans have
perfected these techniques through
experimentation and production

artists.

Floorcloths are handpainted
canvases for floors. When finished
and sealed, floorcloths are hard
wearing and colorful alternatives
to carpets.

They look good whether on a
hardwood floor or on kitchen li-
noleum. Floorcloihs were popular
in the early part of this century
but -in recent times they have
made a strong comeback in the art
world. and are seen in galleries
from New York to Tokyo.

The Maiwa Handpriats Studio
, has been working for the last two
: years on developing a process for
painting floorcloths and now are
very confident and excited. about
their discoveries.

Brighten up the rainy days with
a: handpainted umbrella. For sev-
eral seasons Maiwa Handprints
has produced a line of hand-
painted umbrellas.

‘After many requests to teach
these methods, the workshop de-
veloped. This seminar promises to
be both fun ‘and informative with’
lots of ideas.

Judi Speirs

Speirs is the owner, operator
and teacher of What a Notion
Fabrics Ltd. in West Vancouver.
After receiving a degree in Home
Economics from UBC and years
of teaching, Judi opened her store
in 1986.
