Sunday, Nov. 1, 1992 - North Shore News - 25 Technology helps reduce that sinking feeling MGST seagoing folk think of life rafts as soon as that old sinking feeling hits, but a North Vancouver-based’ company is turning atten- tion to life raft deployment as a matter of daily business. Michael! Becker ‘HIGH TECH After two years of research and development, MGI International Marine Safety Solutions Inc. is marketing a new way to store and deploy life rafts aboard ships. The life raft stowage rack and deployment system (LRS) was de- veloped with aid from the Na- tional Research Council of Canada. Martin Stewart, MGI vice- president of operations said the system differs from other methods of stowing and releasing life rafts. “‘In present stowage and deployment systems, life rafts are tied to supports and released all together. This all-at-once release is potentially dangerous to anyone below the water and may result in damage to the life rafts,’’ Stewart said. The MGI life raft rack allows the launching of life raft con- tainers one at a time. The racks, engineered to Safety Of Life At Sea (SOLAS) interna- tional standards, are in use by Washington State Ferries, Northumberland Ferries in Prince Edward Island and by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. Stewart started the company as a ‘business solutions firm.” A background in the offshore oil industry led him to develop safety clothing and safety flota- tion gear for offshore oil workers. According to MGI sales and marketing man Robert Holmes, the company is researching the development of SOLAS standard life rafts with less frequent servic- ing requirements. The Transport Development Centre, an arm of Transport Canada, has asked MGI to devel- op an improved in-shore fish- erman’s life raft. MGI is also bar-coding its life raft products so that the end user is regularly reminded of maintenance requirements. The company is an agent for several manufacturers of marine safety products, including high- pressure composite valving systems, photo-luminescent safety emergency signage and fire detec- tion and supression systems. MGI is also an agent for Dunlop-Beaufort Canada Ltd. Dunlop-Beaufort manufactures an evacuation chute system. The KIDS’ STUFF " MONDAY Nov. 2--Ongoing Mon.-Fri. Playcare.
