MAILBOX Bike routes need improvements Dear Editor: 1 am one of the growing numbers of people who ride to work on my bike. There are a few simple mat- ters that could be addressed that would make the commute safer. Glass and debris seem to get shifted to the side of the roads where the biker rides. Lions Gate Bridge often has broken glass on it. A death could easily occur if sonieone blew a tire on the rough section of the span (the uneven metal grid and cement) and was unable to maintain control. Capilano and Marine Drive need sweeping as well but present an additiona! hazard of having severe deeps on the curbside drains. If you have a mountain bike tire you can hit these, but if you have a thinner tire you're toast. Most bikes veer around these, causing drivers to swerve and wonder why the biker is so erratic. Could not a heavy metal mesh cover these uneven drains to even out the road? Many drivers are unsure of how wide their car is in relation to lane width. They impede traffic flow because they aren't sure if it is safe to pass a bike. Support proposed middle school Dear Editor: We are writing to convey our strong support for the preposed middle schoo! to be built on the Caulfcild plateau. We believe that a school is badly needed in the westezn section of West Van- couver School District #45 to serve the students beyond the Grade 6 levei. We understand that public surveys showed strong support for the school board's plan to build on the Caulfeild site and that a decision was made to proceed with the new building. We want to urge the members of council to support the plan for a new school in the western sec- tion of West Vanesuver. The proposed plan to combine the new school with a recreation facility would indeed be an exciting and long-needed addition to the community. A stripe painted two feet from the curb, if swept on a regular basis, could serve as a bike lane, and its addition would add a degree of comfort to drivers. Going uphill on steeper hills, it is difficult to keep the bike in as straight a path. You need to stand on the pedals, rocking the bike side to side. This takes up more of the lane. The law should be changed to allow bikes to use the sidewalks on uphill grades. It is an unwritten rule that you bike to downtown on the west side of the bridge and causeway and return on the east. As simmer approaches, more recreational riders will be unaware of this. Couldn't signs be posted on the bridge oy causeway en- trance? Finally, inv does one enter the causeway rorthbound from Georgia Street without riding over grass in Stanley Park? Ted Shandro North Vancouver BEAUTY HAS become a beast. As attitudes change toward female beaty, traditional ways of ‘‘celebrating’”’ challenged. The benefits it are being of breast implant surgery have become dubious, and across the world beauty pageants are being dropped like hot potatoes. The North Shore News survey crew took to the phones to find out North Shore residents’ views on beauty. We asked 414 people ‘‘Do you support the decision to cancel the Miss PNE (Pacific National! Exhibition) Pageant?” Although 35.8% said they supported the decision, a large percentage —- 45.4% — had no opinion. 18.8% did not support the decision. Unfortunately, we have no indication of the proportion of males and females who agreed or disagreed with nixing the beauty pageant. Next, 412 peceple responded to the question ‘“‘Have you attended a beauty pageant?” 16.8% responded ‘‘Yes,’’ while a whopping 83.2% admitted they had never attended.
