Lynn Valley School THIS ONE-room schoolhouse, built in 1908, is one of the earliest pioneer buildings remaining from the first settlement of Lynn Valley. An earlier school was erected on the site in 1904, but was demolished to make way for this building. The design of the schoolhouse was based on the standard pro- vincial school plan of 1901. The plan was adopted for many - British Columbia schools and was Few seconds WHEN A fire truck, am- bulance or other emergency vehicle is responding to an emergency, many lives are in the balance. Someone at the emergency scene where the firefi ighters or paramedics are headed is in danger. A few seconds added to the emergency crew’s response time can make the difference be- tween life and death. There are other lives at stake as well; emergency workers risk their lives every time they answer a call. Don’t make that risk any greater than it already is. The District of North Van- couver Fire Department wants to remind you to be courteous and obey the law regarding emergency NORTH SHORE HERITAGE typical of many built in 1906, with the main windows banking on the left side of the entry. Although this building has been raised for added space and minor alterations have been done to the outside, it still retains its original character. As the population of Lynn Valley grew, another school build- ing with four rooms was added in 1912 in the same vicinity, and the one-room schoolhouse was used for several teaching purposes — one of which was to teach sewing to the girls. In 1920 a much larger building was needed and built. It was on a grander scale, using alternating bands of brick and terra-cotta in its construction and design. It had separate entrances for the girls on one end and the boys on the other. Currently, the original building is the location of the Lynn Valley preschool. — By Dorothy Foster can make the difference HOT TIPS North Vancouver District Fire Department vehicles while you are driving. Keep your radio or other music inside .your car low enough that you can hear sirens approaching. Keeping a window slightly open can help. Be alert for emergency lights approaching ahead, to the sides, and in your rear-view mir- ror. If you see or hear emergency vehicles approaching, pull your car to the right curb or shoulder and stop until the fire trucks or other vehicles have passed. Don’t just stop in the middle of the street. Look quickly to be sure the way is clear before you pull over. If you are stopped at an in- tersection, pull to the right as much as you can, or use caution and common sense to find another place to pull out of the way. If you are walking, stay on the curb out of the way. Keep children close to you. They may try to run out to the street to see the fire truck or ambulance. Emergency vehicle drivers are trained to deal with traffic. You can help by not doing anything unusual, pull to the right as much as you can, and stop. Some day they may be on their way to save you or someone you love.
