There is not one. There are, however, a number of possi- ble partial answers. For example, there are various suggestions cir- culating that a mixture of garlic and onion powder applied to the soil will keep them away. There are also many gardeners who swear by a half-full glass jar of water just set in the garden. However, for each person who seems to have had success with these ‘‘solutions,”’ there is at feast one another who has found them totally unsuccessful. Still another suggestion is to set a radio in the garden, and leave it on (not at high volume!) all night. This apparently scares some rac- coons off. It is said that as long as the wet hair is ‘‘fresh’’ it remains effective. Finally, at least one company makes a smail electric fence unit powered by just four “D’’ cell batteries. It is totally harmless to humans and pets. It does, howev- er, keep raccoons away. Natural- ly, it need only be turned on ai night.
