Nay Best bets for jazz festival HE ANNUAL du Maurier International Jazz Festival, June 21 to July 1, continues to live up to its name, shrinking the world with a galaxy of gigs as musicaliy adventurous as any found on this side of the solar system. This year’s festival opens with the Latin-infused flourish of the Dizzy Gillespie United Nation Cr- chestra. The legendary trumpeter brings along a big all-star band to the Orpheum. Expect sparks to fly. Here’s raore of what's happen- ing alt ever town at various venues: jazz papa Ellis Marsalis Ju- ly 1 at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre; Frank Morgan/George Cables Duo, June 23 at the Van- couver East Cuitural Centre; Courtney Pine Quartet, June 26 at the Vancouver East Cultural Cen- tre; guitarisis Strunz and Farais, june 29 at the Playhouse; Japanese percussionist Yas-Kaz, June 21 at the Western Front; Nat Adderley Quintet, June 22 at the Saturno;. Coastal jazz and Blues Society marketing and publicity director John Orysik, lives for jazz. And he does so literally during the hectic weeks of logistical pretzel twisting leading up to an event that last year drew more than 100,000 people. Music Now recently spoke with Orysik. Music Now: What are your best bets for blues and bebop this year? Orysik: ‘If there is only one to pick for blues it’s Otis Clay. This guy is a legend. He just absolutely blows people away in Europe and Japan. Because there isn’t a lot of push behind gospel music we don’t hear a lot of him here. “For bebop you can’t go wrong with Frank Morgan and George Cables. Frank Morgan pretty much inherited Charlie Parker's crown as the premiere bebop jazz saxophonist. That's (RAT SRTSESS rey Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW definitely for the beboppers right there. The Nat Adderley Quintet is the other one. Those two shows stick out like sore thumbs.” Music Now: The festival is always talking about taking “calculated risks.” Which of the gigs happening this year falls under the most caiculated of risks category? Orysik: “} think the whole festi- val is a calculated risk when you get down to it. Jon Jang lon Jang and the Pan Asian Arkestra) for in- siance, these people don't have broad commercial appeal because they are not presented in any il- luminating fashion in the mass media. So it’s a question of ex- posure. People don’t know about them. Yet we feel they are ar- tistically fantastic. The Ukranian duo (Oleksandr Nesterov and Petro Tovstukha), that's a first.”’ Music Now: | understand you made the trip to the Soviet Union to connect with the duo, and that the experience has resulted in some artistic exchanges. Orysik: “It’s a pet project of mine that goes back to 1988 when | went there on a personal visit. | have family and relatives over there. | came across a place called the Kiev Jazz Club. “They were out here for ail of last year’s festival as observers, soaking up the sounds. And | managed to get them an im- promptu concert at the Glass Slip- per. One thing led to another and we were invited to work out the details of doing a music and festi- val exchange. We're planning to tour Paul Plimley all over the Ukraine. We’ re scheduling it for September.”’ ose For more information or to order tickets call the jazz Hotline at 682-0706, Remember jazz is free June 22 and June 23, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Gastown, and at the Plaza of Nations, June 29 through july 1.
