NEWS photo ke Wi Miss North Shore’s goal is social work WHILE SOME people may feel that pageants are increas- ingly becoming an anachronism, the incoming 1991-92 Miss North Shore may persuade them otherwise. Crowned July 19 at Centennial Theatre, 19-year-old Sabrina Deneumoustier does not list the - typical pageant glamour-ga! aspirations of modelling and -::- ting as her lifetime goals. Instead, the Sutherland grai wants to work with street kids after finishing her education in social work. “I know it’s a real burn-out job but if [I get into working with street kids, that’d be great,’’ she says. This less than glamorous goal is based on her own experiences with substance abuse. “] had a problem with drinking and I’ve been sober for two years now, and I’m only 19,’' says Deneumoustier. ‘‘There’s a lot of teens who have probleims.”’ Throughout the pageant events, Deneumoustier spoke candidly about her past. “It’s who I am, so I’m not go- ing to lie about it or cover it up,”’ she says.‘ The 1991-92 Princess, runner-up Ginny Pereira (Miss North Shore Auto Family), aiso spoke about the topic of substance abuse in her interview with the judges, accord- ing to pageant director Gertie Todd. Next month, she will spend five days attending PNE events with 50 other candidates during the Miss PNE pageant. Meanwhile, Todd, who cele- brated her 40th year with the pag- eant this year, said the pageant was a success even though, with only six candidates, she had the smallest number of entrants yet. “I was very, very pleased but | would have liked to have some more girls.”” Todd anticipates that Deneumoustier will be active in the community during her year as Miss North Shore. “She'll go a long way.
