“ Next Saturday it’s Fantasy Food 2006, with 30 of the best restaurants offering the finest in cuisine and pres- enting a taste of the future, along with wines from North America’s leading wineries, an auction, lots of entertainment, celebrity hosts, (I’m flattered to be considered one of those celebs!) and a dance. It’s going to take place on Sat. Sept. 22 at Science World. o Joy Metcalfe JOY TELLS ALL But there’s a serious side to all this gaiety and frivolity. Fantasy Food 2000 is a vitally important fundraiser for a young man by the name of Darryt Won. Darryl Won is 25 years old. He was born and grew up on Vancouver (sland. After completing fis education and Cook’s Training in Nanaimo, he was selected by the BC Chefs’ Association in 1988 as one of five top apprentices in the province. He’s worked at Whistler, in Dun- can, at the Laurel Point Inn in Victoria, and lastly, was sous chef at Geoffrey Howe’s Salmon House on the Hill in West Van. He’s a very quiet, hard-working and pleasant young fellow. Last April, after working all morning, Darry! got imo his car and drove along the Upper Levels Highway. The road was dry, it was mid- day and he certainly wasn't drink- ing. Suddenly he lost control of the car, slid off the road, and hit a lamp-post head on. The second and third vertebrae in his spine snapped, and Darryl Won, in a matter of seconds, became a quadr i plegic. One of the co-sponsors of Fan- tasy Food 2000, besides CKNW and CFMI, is the BC Paraplegic Foundation. They have set up the Fantasy Food 2000 Trust Fund. All monies raised at this gala af- fair will benefit Darryl so that he can lead the most independent life possible. The trust fund will benefit anyone involved in the res- taurant/food industry who sus- tains a disabling injury in the future. It’s $95 2 ticket for an en- joyable, unique evening and a very worthy cause! Every time you see a person speeding, you want to tell them to talk to Darryl Won. He can only breathe, when a machine lets him... ake The 10th annual Terry Fox Run takes place today in all parts of the Lower Mainland. For the past several years, VanCity'’s 23 com- munity branches and head office, along with their families, jogged. walked and even roller-skated the Skm route in Stanley Park. They celebrated weeks of fundraising auctions, car washes and garage ‘sales and paid tribute to that special young Canadian at their Sisth annual VanCity Terry Fox Run Night. The news is that VanCity’s total this year went well beyond their expectations with a total of $120,000! And West Van's Sr. V.P. Wayne Mackay was the top fundraiser with $9,387.03! kee The first annual Molson Indy Vancouver ball was a great suc- cess, not only for the participants, but most especially for the two benefitees, the Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Hospital. The at- tire was almost the feature enter- tainment of the night — everything from white Bermudas to white tuxedos and everything in between. I expect that all the wives and girlfriends who told their guys what to wear as ‘‘sum- mer whites.” probably got an ear- ful the next morning. The ones who rented white tuxes probably felt overdressed and out of pocket, while the guys in the white shosts felt just plain stupid... The gentleman garnering most of the attention was the spare, autocratic race driver Emerson Fitapoldi. He was surrounded by glamorous ladies and envious husbands... In the midst of the crowd I spotted one very messy pit crew member in white coveralls by the name of Gordon Campbell, doing his press-the-flesh shtick with West Van's Hons.
