WV mayor calls for truck ban WEST VANCOUVER District Mayor Don Lanskail has repeated his call that all truck traffic should be taken away from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal in the wake of Monday's tragic motor vehicle accident which claimed two lives. **Absolutely,’’ said Lanskail when asked if the provincial gov- ernment should give serious consideration to removing truck traf- fic from Horseshoe Bay. ‘*We’d like to see all the Vancouver Island ferry traffic out of there (Horseshoe Bay),"’ said Lanskail. His comments come after a dump teuck loaded with hot asphalt slammed into a van full of holiday travellers at the ferry terminal after the truck’s brakes apparently had failed. The accident killed a mother and her daughter and sent seven others to hospital. Lauskail said the district will wait until all of the investigations into the Horseshoe Bay accident are completed before making any formal presentations for changes to truck traffic currently passing through the terminal. But he added he will bring the matter up with Transportation and Highways Minister Rita Johnston when he meets with her about another issue. Lanskail had first made the call for removing all truck traffic away from Horseshoe Bay in March when Victoria announced the creation of the new Mid-Island Express ferry route which runs from Tsawwassen to Nanaimo. The route is specifically designed for truck traffic. Police search for| missing woman WEST VANCOUVER police are searching for a missing 91-year-old woman. Businessman claims NV bylaw outdated WHAT DOES beating your wife after 8 p.m. in London, England have in common with having two businesses in your North Van- couver City home? By PAMELA LANG Contributing Writer NORTH VANGOUVER {CITY COUNCIL: «: According to. city resident Christopher Deas-Dawlish, both are illegal because of out-of-date city bylaws. The London bylaw, he said, is antiquated because it allows wife-beating. The North Van- couver City bylaw, regulating home-based businesses, is anti- quated because it doesn't recognize current esonomic realities. Deas-Dawlish, whose licence application to operate a home- based business is pending, spoke to council June 25. He said he expects to be denied the licence because his wife runs a govern- ment approved day care from their home. Expressing a desire to run a completely legal business, he said discussions with federal, provin- cial and municipal employees may have led him to operate illegally. Advice given to him included: * not declaring the day care in his licence application; © using someone’s else’s address on the application; * using a post office box as his address; * or ignoring city hall, and operating discreetly without a licence. “*Unless we change this type of law to suit our society, we con- done deceit,’ he said questioning how many businesses followed city staff advice to operate illegally. These unlicensed businesses take control away from council, he added. The trend is toward operating businesses at home, and the bylaw should change to account for two-job households where both jobs happen to be home-based businesses, pointed out Deas- Dawlish. The business licence is required for Deas-Dawlish to operate a video production business from his home. He also pointed out that his work will not affect the neighborhood because he expects to use his home only for editing, with most of the work done out- side the home. There will be no customers, no traffic, and no signage, he ex- plained. City council referred to a letter from Deas-Dawlish, asking for a report on the issue including a definition of a business.
