Contest cancelled this year THE NORTH Shore Gardens Contest Committee announced this week the temporary suspension of the Gardens Contest. Plans are under way to resume the event in new form in 1991 with emphasis on civic beautification. Said committee spokesman Dirk Oostindie, ‘‘This decision was made reluctantly and we realize it will disappoint a lot of people, but we are taking time out to plan and re-organize for the new initiative to be launched in spring 1991. “The event will take on a new focus with emphasis on civic beautification, providing increased opportunity for neighborhood and lk LOWEST PRICES GUARANTEED Canada Way community involvement. In its revised form it will add a new dimension to civic beautification and will benefit the whole com- munity. We expect 1991 to be a banner year for the North Shore.”’ The committee will release fur- ther details before the new pro- gram is implemented. The popular North Shore Gardens Tour of award-winning gardens will, however, again be offered. Committee chairman Diana Belhouse said plans were nearine completion for this year’s tour, to be held on Sunday, July 29. Further information will be made available nearer that date. The doors open at 10 a.m. and entrance to the gardens is free. The VanDusen Plant Sale has become well known throughout the Lower Mainland and Islands, for its selection of well-known, as well as difficult to find plants. Volun- teers work throughout the year to bring to the gardening public an incredible variety of plant stock, impossible to find in one spot anywhere else in the Greater Van- couver area. There will be a Pot Luck corner that will have some unusual and no longer commercially available plant stock donated by the friends of VanDusen as well as the Gardens itself. All proceeds go to the Canadian Heritage Garden, a first in Canada, now nearing completion of construction of Phase II at VanDusen Gardens on Oak Street at 37th Ave., Vancouver.
