The capsule inctuded the front page of the North Shore News. The time capsule was a class projec: organized hy Hassard. Piymouth students open time capsule COLLEEN CURTIS turned back the clock a decade recently by returning to her elermentary school to open a time cansule planted in 1979 by a class of Plymouth School G:ade 6 and Grade 7 stu- dents. By MICHAEL BECKER News Reporter October 24, 1979 was the official day celebrating the International Year of the Child. Plymouth Elementary School teacher Tony Hassard had his students mark the occasion by putting together the time capsule project. Twenty-six students each filled a large envelope with personal memen- toes, Eighteen returned to open the capsule 10 years later to the day. Among the items rediscovered by Curtis were newspaper clip- pings, price lists, six cents and photos of the things she likea. A note to herself recorded that bus fares ranged from !5 to 50 cents. A movie admission cost a max- imum of $2 — a candy bar, 30 cents. She wondered if there would be gasoline and what nickels would The Auxiliary gift store. Her envelope also included a taped message to the 20-year-old Colleen: ‘‘Hi. I'm Colleen. I sup- pose you are, too. This is 1979 In- ternational Year of The Child. I'm 10. I guess you’re 20. I’m in Mr. Hassard’s class Grade 6. This speech is in a time capsule. It will be opened by mc !0 years later in 1989. This day, Wednesday Oc- tober 24, 1979 is special. i hope I will remember. But will I?’’ The tape also included a few barked words from her dog Teddy: “Woof! Woof!’’ Said the contemporary Curtis, “1 thought everything would be so advanced and futuristic. | thought in 1989, cars would be flying. At age 20, I thought J’d be married with children.’’ But as this futuristic year closes, cars remain bound to the ground, movie admissions are over $7 and Curtis is a fourth year, single, nutritional science student at UBC. Meanwhile, FHiassard’s latest time-travelling project is a time capsule buried for 480 students to be opened in the year 2,000.
