The harried marketing specialist
has raced like a lunatic to the air-
port after his cab was stolen, only
to find out his flight has been
delayed. Now, due to an airline
error, he has been bumped from
first class and squeezed beside
loudmouth salesman Del Griffith
(ohn Candy).

The salesman’s airing of his opi-
nions as well as his feet is enough
to drive anyone to the brink of
homicide, but for Neal it’s just the
tip of the iceberg.

His desperate bid to reach his
home in Chicago for Thanksgiving
is about to have every obstacle
known to man hurled his way.
Most of this guantlet will be thanks
to his cheerful lummox of a travel-
ling companion.

Together, they will make a
journey of jerks and starts by (you
guessed it) planes, trains and
automobiles and just about every
other mode of transport as Del
“helps” his new friend.

takes his character from a laugh-
able buffoon to someone who
wins our compassion.

The pain in his face as Martin fi-
nally spills all his pent-up an-
noyance for his inconsideration is
anything but funny.

Steve Martin also comes off very
well as the put-upon straight man.
Watching his composure slowly
crumble with each fresh hell is an
hilarious study in grim resolve.

Surprisingly, this fine comedy
comes from John Hughes, the man
who gave us mediocre Brat Pack
movies like The Breakfast Club.
