Although Ms. Cotlins was concerned that te addi fion of cable channels may have serious negative in- plications for the future of the Canadian broadcasting industry, T hope her, and the government's prime in- terest, is the public's interest and our freedom of choice. That would mean making as many channels avaliable as feasible, not limiting our opportunities to choose. foam surprised to see Ms. Collins support the CAC's opposition to the additional channels, based on the argument (hat low-income people may not wish to spend money on channels they don't watch. | would have preferred to sce her support the view that providing all available channels ata flat fee would DR. I feel sorry for people like Lin- wood Trask (Fri., Feb. 26, Mailbox) who believe that Dr. Ruth’s column ‘sullies’ your newspaper’s reputation. Is he aware that lack of proper informa- tion is what contributes to this country's staggering teen pregnan- cy rate? Maybe he and all others who have written in to protest would rather that people in need of in- formation such as which Dr. Ruth supplies simply go on Siving in ig- norance, I think that Mr. Trask and all the other protesters are more than old enough to censor their own reading material. If they don't like Dr. Ruth, don’t read the column. But don’t any of them dare to in- terfere with freedom of the press, please. H. The addition of a News Channel can easily be considered as partof that expansion. The CRC, Itke all broadcasters, is regulated by the CRTC, The CRTC has decided that the CBC should obtain the licence for the News Channel on cable, There is ao reason why the Cabinet or Parliament should be involved in that decision. If the government does not support decisions made by the CRTC, it should replace it. G.
