Residential property worth $120,000 will be levied appres- imately $720 for a 4.6 per cent in- crease over the [986 sate, ex- cluding the school district portion of collectable taxes. The increase marks a conser- vative approach for 1987 in a M4 per cent of the tax base ts car- ried by residential property. “An average 5.2 per cent in- crease for all properties of record shows our increases are among the lowest in the Lower Mainfand,” said Mayor Marilyn Baker. The tax levy will increase by $1.2 milion of 6.2 per cent over last year. New construction in the district accounts for a one per cent increase in the municipal tax base. The commercial tax rate increase matches the residential with a 4.6 per cent increase. The new rate is approximately $9 for every $1,000 of taxable value; industrial pioper- ty increases 10 per cent to approx- imately $13 per $1,000; utilities in- crease 10 per cent to approximately $16 per $1,000 taxable value. Highlights of the budget include capital budget expenditures totall- ing $11.2 million. District roads receive $4.5 mil- lion, district equipnient expen- ditures $1.4 million, and $965,000 goes to recreation. The district operating budget in- creases by $2.4 million, a 7.5 per cent increase over last year, to $35 million. Major reasons for the increase include a 12 5 per cent increase in police costs ($536,000), an 11.1 per cent increase in recreation funding ($554,000), and a $500,000 provi- sion to cover the estimated costs of investigating and registering illegal suites.
