By BARRETT FISHER News Editar So says Capilano Mall general manager Phil McArthur, who has overseen the $34 million expansion at the I5-acre mall site by developers and owners. Cambridge Leaseholds Ltd. Cambridge is a 50 per cent owner of the centre, with Canada Life Assurance owning the remain- ing 50 per cent. “‘When things were not so crit- ical,’” McArthur said, ‘industry did not have to be well done to succeed. But now the competition is so great, malls have to be well designed, functional, pretty, com- ‘fortable and have the merchandise’ consumers want.” McArthur said there has been an evolution in merchandise, and a blossoming, of stores over the past - 10 ° years “catering to speciality items.
