El mailbox Calling all Elliotts Dear Editor: British Columbia residents who bear the name Elliot (or a variation of this spelling) are being sought by the Elliot Clan Society. The Chief of the Clan, Scotland’s Sir Ar- thur Francis Augustus Boswell Elliot, ‘‘lith Baronet of Stobs and Laird of Redheugh,’’ will be in Vancouver this September at the start of a two-week Cana- dian visit. The Clan Society is holding a special dinner in his honour at the Faculty Club, Universi- ty of British Columbia, on September 17th, and would like to extend an invitation to as many B.C. Elhots as possibie. We would like to hear from all those who are Eliots, were an Elliot or who are the sons or daughters of an Elliot. The dinner will be held at the university for all Elliots descended from a long Scot- tish line stretching back to the 14th Century to meet and to learn of their heritage from Sir Arthur who will speak at the dinner. WV resolution ‘meaningless’ Dear Editor: It was good to see the full account of the presentation to West Vancouver’s Council on July 31 by West Van- couver Citizens for Peace. They were asking Council to declare West Vancouver a ‘‘nuclear weapons free zone’’. However the headline: ‘‘Weapons Ban: Groups Win WV Support”’ is quite wrong. The Council rejected the proposal. The Council showed great courtesy in hstening (most members present, at least) to the concerns of the citizens, even though they had clearly decided beforehand to ‘‘fob us off’ with a completely meaningless resolution prepared in advance by the Clerk of the Municipality. This careful and complete evasion has of course been practised Ay all western governments, especially Canada (notable exceptions: the Netherlands and New Zealand), in the face of grow- ing concern. The two major parties are More mail on Page A8 clearly searching for more ef- fective ways to avoid -or confuse- the issue. The peace movement will do what it can to raise it, and to relate it, ‘as it should be related, to the question of jobs and the economy. About that the parties talk very much, but say very little that is practical or meaningful. We must remember Eisenhower’s famous remark in his farewell message: ‘‘The people want peace so much that one day the politicians will have to stand aside and let them have it.”” That day is not about to dawn. But we must hope that it will come sooner than our politicians expect. Elliott Vancouver A7 - Wednesday, August 8, 1984 - North Shore News How to save dogs and victims Dear Editor: How much blood must a dog draw before it is destroyed? Must it tear off an arm and scalp as happened to Shawn Fraser in Kelowna two years ago? Or would just one arm or just one scalp be justification? Ms. Thompson’s dog was apparently out of control and the West Vancouver Police should be commended for ac- ting quickly and averting a possitive tragedy. Ms. Thompson should never have left her dog un- chained in an open car. If dog owners showed pro- per care of their animals, more bite victims and dogs would be spared. Douglas G.
